Replacement windows vs. full tear outs

We are in the process of putting an addition on our house. We keep going back and forth between the existing windows. Should we do replacement windows or do full tear outs. As a side note we are residing the whole house. Is it worth the extra money for the tear outs?

Are the existing window frames in good shape? Tear out involves new inside/outside trim etc why do that if your windows are basically sound.

For our remodel we replaced, you can't tell the difference. To cut costs, the windows on the side of the house are vinyl in and out, a sound but less expensive type than the interior wood framed. We also changed the style of some at no extra charge. If it is important to you, make sure that you get your contractor to finish the interior with window sills, I was surprised that I was going to loose my sills with the replacement windows and had to ask for them with the new windows. We lived in our project as well, the window work was quick.

Hi everyone. Thanks for the comments. Sorry for not responding sooner but this a zombie thread from two and a half years ago and I didn't realise people were commenting on it. We didn't put in the doors but will be doing so when we redo the patio in the spring. The house is very much an outdoor house and being able to walk straight out onto the patio for parties etc will be lovely. The pictures don't really show the proportions of the room but it is large and there will be plenty of room behind the sofa to walk behind to the french doors and for two chairs looking out of the french doors so that you don't just see the back of the sofa from the patio. The room is now properly furnished and the walls have just been painted a soft mink colour which goes well with the velvet sofas and the metallic cushions and other metallic elements in the room. It is my favourite room in the house I think. Very peaceful and calming.

Depending on the condition of the windows, if they are timber you may be able to double glaze the existing windows as opposed to replacing them. Secondary glazing is often preferred in listed buildings, where you may not be allowed to install double glazing. Where double glazing is allowed, most people will opt for double glazing rather than secondary glazing. Repair or replace infographic Regarding the later discussions on the thread about plastic vs. timber, I would definitely recommend choosing timber rather than plastic. Not only are timber windows more environmentally friendly than plastic windows (when using sustainable timber), but if you live in a period home, plastic windows will often devalue the property. We regularly have home buyers asking for budget prices to replace plastic windows with timber windows so they can ask for money off the asking price. I'm not sure where you are based? Extension to replace retaining wall - garden at window level? Help!

I levelled my garden, a paved area of roughly 6m x 6m that sloped upwards 2 1/2 feet. We also got crazy quotes for digging it out, which thanks to the joys of a London terrace had to be done completely by hand with bags of dirt carried through my kitchen. We ended up managing that part ourselves with help from casual, non-builder labour. (Turns out the guys at the local gym don’t earn much, have some spare hours, and have lots of friends in the same boat.). I studied up on retaining walls and became convinced that a timber retaining wall would work. We bought treated timber through Jackson’s Fencing using their slotted fence posts for support. The retaining wall/ new fence was professionally installed, but they had very little digging to do to tidy up the removed area. Six years later it’s still going strong and I fully expect it to last.

Thats astonishing. It doesn’t look like a house that has been empty for 35 years. I think you are on the right track with light window frames and dark garage doors, front door and fascias but I am afraid I agree with Jonathan. I don’t think the colour you have chosen look ps quite right with the yellow brick.

I plan to do a tear out, but that is because the person who last remodeled my house didn't change the window sizes and they are all tiny. The house is on a lake and you can barely see it from any room in the house. More and bigger windows are required.
