What's the best thing about the British summer?

The summer has finally arrived! The heatwave looks like it's here to stay for another... few days. Which is all we need, really! Picnics, camping, eating outdoors, going to the beach - everything's so much easier when the temperature hits 20+.

What do you love the most about the British summer?

The "two-day heatwave" headlines and public health warnings. News and morning TV programmes reporting from Brighton. Brits going tops off – thinking "get it while it's hot – and trudging back home looking like streaky bacon. Only in the UK.

Oh, strawberry picking is also a great summer pastime. Gorging in the fields.

Living and working by the sea! Our offices are just a few hundred yards from the beach, so you can stroll along it, or go and have a paddle at lunchtimes. One of the many, many benefits of living in Cornwall!

Soap operas, Strictly and I'm a celebrity get me out of here! The way we put ourselves down and don't take ourselves too seriously (typical misunderstood British humour). The way we come together with national pride for important sporting events or royal occasions. Our national tolerance. Bank holiday weather, bbqs, beer and football, takeaways, fish n Chips at the seaside. National trust properties, tea and scones, cupcakes and Mary Berry. DIY. We love our DIY and Sundays at B & Q. last 3 have been small villages/towns. I will admit to horrible mail service, 3 electric bills in 4 years balanced by the fox wandering through down town one day. The inability to go anywhere for nearly a week due to snow balanced by the absolute silence and sudden bunny party due to a fresh snowfall. The inability to go anywhere for over a week due to one of the typical floods, where the county actually comes around in big trucks, just to watch the watch slosh in your front door balanced by watching a minimum of 100 eagle, white and gold, hunting as the fish come into the swamp to spawn. Pluses and minuses, to me, far more pluses.

I once read a story about an old woman, who was listening to a younger woman complain about how her husband left his whiskers in the sink day after day. The old woman, who was a widow, softly reminded her that those whiskers meant her husband was alive and still with her. She, the older woman, would love to wash the whiskers of her husband down the drain every morning because that would mean her husband was still with her. So, when my husband leaves me stranded on the toilet with no toilet paper, instead of getting angry, I remember to be thankful he is still here to grab the last piece off the roll.

Hi judy, Pimms is a gin based concoction served at lunch time with either lemonade or ginger ale (my favourite), throw in some cucumbers, mint, orange and strawberries and you have nutritional value plus a respectable drink for lunch and watching cricket! :-) http://britishfood.about.com/od/drinkingtraditions/a/pimms.htm

Light nights are the best. Unless your trying to put kids to bed. The worst is the fly that's been buzzing around my head for the last 10 minutes that I just can't get rid of.

No real humidity! 30 years in the American South and I still struggle with it. And the countryside, it's the only thing I really miss about Britain

We live in NE Scotland quite near the North Sea, lol, so for us the best bit of a British Summer is the real possibility of leaving a few layers off when dressing for a day out! Never leave the brolly home, though, this is after all NE Scotland - down waterproof and brollies always in the boot!

Having lived abroad for eight years and suffered sun temperatures around 50c I realized that we were stuck indoors more often in the summer than in the winter. Back in England, I can be out every day and at all times of day. I'd rather wear a cardi or jacket, even carry a brolly and be out and about. English coffee shops and cakes. I could go on. I love being back in England

Being able to get out without a cardigan or a jacket., lying under a tree shade in a park with a nice book and some wine, barbeques!, leaving early from work with everyone, enjoying the short cut through the park at 9 pm, sitting at a river front bar with friends and getting drunk. Oh I love the British summer !

This is making me homesick with a vengeance, I am listening to BBC radio as I write, I don't feel quite so cut off when I listen to the news or the weather forecasts. When you have grandchildren in America and Australia, this is where it's at!

The long evenings that seem to go on forever. It's still a novelty to me even after living here since 2001! We definitely don't get that in the Caribbean...yes, of course the weather is incomparable but I definitely appreciate the long evenings here.

Ok, I'm not from UK, but I just got back from Europe and it was a lot colder than normal, which I liked (20C and 8 at night). I would rather have that then the heat and humidity we have in the states

I love how everyone's mood seems to lift instantly when the sunshine comes out, the fact that we don't have guaranteed summer sunshine means than when we do, we really make the most of it! It definitely gives me a little extra spring in my step :)
