To stain a set of hardwood gates to be able to withstand the weather. The finish some people say makes the wood look like plastic. Is this a put off?????

The amount of solids in the finish give it that plastic look, the more solids the more protection and more of a plastic look. Other things to consider making a gate stand up would be: a copper, stainless, galvanized cap at the top of the gate to protect the end grain of the vertical styles, this is where the gate will be the most susceptible to problems.
To protect the bottom of the same styles, varnish the bottom of the gate, great water resistance and long lasting since it doesn’t see sun light down there. Also varnish behind the hinges. Then it’s just maintenance on the faces.

Wood certainly has a lot more to offer in both style and feel and practicality, you can not put a hot pan on to a plastic chopping board. There are various designs of chopping boards you can produce with wood, as well as enhancing the natural beautiful grain and colour of the various wood species. The three species most ideal and compatible for a kitchen and food environment are Beech, Maple & Sycamore, The most beautiful and admired chopping boards are the ones that are also Spalted (showing scattered black lines) It is possible to get Spalted Beech, Spalted Maple & Spalted Sycamore, Also ripple back and birds eye Maple are exquisite. Disappointed in having to have metal trim around tiled bathroom window

I absolutely hate those trim pieces. When you are spending hundreds or thousands on tile to do a project and then finish it with these trim products it looks cheap and tacky. Plus when you are using a classic or vintage tile those shiny metal pieces or worse the cheap white plastic doesn't match. Just ruins the whole thing. I suspect builders like this kind of trim because it fast and easy to use and covers a multitude of sins. You don't have to be a particularly skilled tiler. Nor do you have to do any special cuts.

If you are looking for bifold doors timber possibly isn't the way to go as the door panes can not be made as big as in aluminium and with the possibility of expansion or shrinkage aluminium is a more suited material. There are also lots of great sliding doors out there! The ALUK sliding doors and Smart system visoglides are a good price and fit for purpose. I love wood and this door are made beautiful . I'm a builder myself and when I think of building with wood I think of how boat builders build. There a whole page dedicated to the subject, which oil to use. You did a amazing job, and know it doesn't look fake.

Considering the wood you started with, this is about the only course you can go. If you want to end up really dark brown you just about have to start with a wood that is that color. Otherwise you use a really heavily pigmented stain. And how well the wood stains will depend on the porosity of the wood you started with.

Awesome job. currently looking at shiplap Ipe siding and this looks just as nice. Ipe is very costly but is supposed to be very durable, its used near water, decks/docks. Your job looks meticulous and very high end ! Love it!!

Look like plastic? Never heard of that, I don't think they look plastic at all. I have a white plastic gate and trellis in my entry which looks like wood--but doesn't rot like wood. I'll never have to paint it either!

Picasso 58 I just finished a IPE porch decking Last summer , came out beautiful, my advice is a very hard wood, smoked a lot of bits, and saw blades well worth it. I also hand pick each board my client was very demanding ( it's-my twin sister)

Rivertown, Where did you get your IPE, all I'm finding is far away lumber mills that will make the boards whatever size you desire. Then the freight is expensive too. My son is opening a restaurant and we don't own the building, we have a good lease but still would like to limit how much money we spend on improving the property.

The wood we used is Sapele. I find it has a good close nit grain and takes stain very well. The stain we use on all our gates is a product called Remmers Induline DW-601-35. It has a 35% silk gloss level and is UV, weather resistant,permanently elastic and does not yellow or chalk. Din EN 71-3 Safety for toys, but I would hope no children are going to be chewing on the gates. As Beach Builders Supplies said, its a high solids high build stain, so it can give that feel of plastic to the touch. My customers love it , but just a few say it feels false and looks like wood affect plastic. you need that Finnish to seal the timber and look after the gate long term. When I come across a clear product that brings the colour and flowery grain out that last I would more than embrace it. You dammed if you do and dammed if you don't . It will last between three and five before another coat is needed. I have had really good results with this product that out strip other products I've tried. Environmental issues come into play with all exterior woodwork. One set of gates could go six years and yet the same set in a different place could need re staining after three. Its down to how well they are finished at the start and the micro environment of the resting place of the gates.

Very nice. They don't look plastic. What you might be reacting to is perfection in staining (hopefully on all sides. Do they complement the rest of your fencing?

If you haven't done horizontal before, be prepared for a bit of settling of the planks. Perhaps bigger gaps than you see right now. A quality fencing/gate company will help you adjust through this.
