Is this the most difficult space to work with?
Comments (101)I think the option of having the tv under the stairs.. Is the best idea.. Maybe have a tv, media unit made to measure if possible .. Draws or cupboards underneath for storage. Small shelves at the sides for little ink-naks. If needed.. A smaller maybe glass oblong table in front of the window. The table will still allow light through.. Making sure passable through to the stairs.. And the sofa on the back wall.. Lovely rug in the centre with coffee table or chest for extra storage if needed... Maybe some open floating shelves off set above the sofa. Use an accent colour with accessories.. From the rug or cushions.. Don't go overboard with large piece of furniture... Simple statements.......See MorePainting composite front door
Comments (0)Hi fellow Houzzers! I've just moved into a house with a black front door. It's composite not wood, so I'm not sure which paint would work best? I think the Rust-Oleum's Universal all-surface paint works on composite materials but can't be sure. Can anyone recommend suitable brands? Also, tips for painting composite doors would be very welcome :-) Thanks...See MoreOpinions on painting or not painting this dark wood?
Comments (15)HI Gina, Definitely paint it out - doors, windows and stairs (leave handrail dark to contrast ). I spent 10 years at our previous 1930's house debating whether to paint the original bannisters which had been varnished by previous owners. Prep it all well - sand and clean and prime or you may get away with no sanding and use Zinsser B-I-N primer. I used white eggshell on bannisters and stained the handrails dark. I also painted the hall and landing walls/ceiling in Pavilion Grey (valspar colour match) and white. I can't tell you what a difference it made to the brightness and feel of the area and we already had big stained glass front door and long window on the stairs but the colour scheme really brightened it up. Will try to add photos.. Good luck. BTW we've recently moved to an 1830's weavers house and its dark, dark, wood EVERYWHERE!! Lots more painting to hone my skills..!...See MorePainting wood work
Comments (5)If you want some sheen to it, then try a water-based satinwood paint. Eggshell paint is another option - but that's really low sheen and may not be the look you're looking for. I've been painting over a load of old paintwork in our Victorian terrace, with the skirtings and doors being rather battered in places. As it's up in the "servant's quarters" in the attic, I think it adds character. To cover gloss I've sanded back lightly to give the paint something to stick to, nothing too strenuous. I've painted over with a special undercoat Zinsser Bullseye 123 Plus which minimises the need to sand and you can possibly get away without sanding if your woodwork isn't 160 years old! Its a really runny paint to work with, so if you're working with carpets in place and don't want to mess up current decor you may be better off sanding. There's a liquid sandpaper product that's meant to help - not used it yet, but gives you another option that minimises dust. Don't know if it smells. I've finished off with a few coats of White Dulux quick drying satinwood and the results have been fine. The satinwood needed a good 3 coats, so may be time consuming if you've a load of woodwork to cover. I know there are one coat paints out there, and opinions on these tend to be divided. All those paints are water based and low odour, as children sleep on the same floor....See Morechapelhillelem
