Alcoves. To shelve or not to shelve?
Comments (7)I was gonna shelve mine. I've got a lot of books and the TV to deal with. But then I decided to keep them free of built in shelves and put a whole wall of shelving behind the sofa instead. Which means the books aren't the first things you'll see walking into the room. And from the sofa the view will be more relaxing. Plus pulling the sofa out almost into the middle of the room is a lot cosier and on trend than having it up against the wall. I haven't built the shelf unit yet but here's a sketch, and the most recent photo of the alcove. I've got a brass fender there now too....See Morebuilt in unit around pocket door

Comments (0)I’d like to design a built in unit in this space - bottom will be bio ethanol fireplace, top will be TV and sides will be shelve etc. I have fireplace details but would like to ‘build’ it visually size wise. Thx!...See MoreFront Room Shelving around fireplace in home with picture rail

I found a local carpenter and he basically copied the idea for us - and years later we still love our shelves, and several of our friends have copied them! We even copied the two lower angled shelves for our tv! The cost was also much better than buying ready made floating shelves or even Ikea offers. My top tip - find a local carpenter!...See MoreUser
