How can I bring natural light or the feel of it into a dark flat?
Comments (8)Hi, I presume you are looking for cosmetic solutions & not things like solar tunnels that are fitted into your ceiling via your roof to pull in more natural light? If so, then you can go 2 ways:- 1) if your room is north facing then don't fight it. Go dark & moody (glamour) with your decor and add lots of reflective surfaces to make the room stand out. We did this in our Nth facing Victorian room and it worked a lot better than when it was all white! 2) or, use clever things like light reflective paint (dulux) , add mirrors onto the bottom walls and even on the side walls to reflect light from the window back into the room. Mirrors are really good at doing this so it's worth experimenting with where your light hits. Any Reflective surface - ie silk finish on walls and not matt, light & bright furniture. 3) you can of course add in extra lighting but that doesn't resolve the issue of the room being dark in the day. Even in our current house which has a lot of light, I still have to turn the light on any room which is not full on South facing - and even in those rooms, that's only on the sunny days!...See MoreI need help please to bring my sitting room to Life!
Comments (9)Hi. It's quite difficult to work out the whole room from the pics and exactly what your style is. If the room can take it I'd go for a mid tone grey on the walls so there isn't as much contrast with the sofas but if not a pale but warm grey. Swap the rug for something plain but with texture so a natural coloured sisal for instance so it doesn't make the room feel smaller with such a contrast between rug and floor. I'd use orange as the accent colour so maybe grey patterned curtains with orange cushions and additional artwork. It may also be worth considering blinds rather than curtains to give the sofa some space. I would also pick another colour like green or teal etc to liven it up for just a couple of accessories. Use a mixture of textured and patterned cushions. put something in the middle of the dining table be it a plant or flowers or vase etc. also consider the lighting as table and floor lamps will add a cosy feel. Can you move the dining table so it's central under the light and add a feature pendant (maybe with some orange!)? The existing art looks as if it is hung a little high so would rehang a few inches lower and align over the sofa. Is it a table in front of the tv? Can that be moved in front of the sofa and accessorised? A plant and a couple of piles of books are cheap accessories! Is there anyway to move the furniture to cover the ŵall sockets or maybe disguise with a potted plant?...See MoreLighting up and bringing to life and old chapel conversion
Comments (2)Perhaps lights to mark the approach and up the stairs. A big lantern in the porch and perhaps spotlights towards the most interesting architectural features such as the central window or any roof features such as weather vein, clock or bell...See MoreHELP bring my chimney breast back to life
Comments (6)To be honest if it was me and I was going to paint the brick then I would go and paint it so that it is obviously painted rather than trying to recreate the red brick look with paint. I think it will just look fake whereas if you were to paint it white it would compliment your walls nicely and you would still get to keep the texture of the brick without trying to make it look like something it's not if that makes sense. There are great tutorials online from bloggers who have done it if you are interested in seeing how the finished result would look. You could full on paint it white or whitewash it for a more watered down paler look. Good luck with your project :)...See MoreIsland Bathrooms & Kitchens
