need help with north facing bedroom

I'm trying to choose a colour scheme which is bold so as not to be washed out in a room which lacks in natural light but not so dark as to make the room feel small. We have a wall of dark stained built in wardrobes at the end of the bed and I am thinking of putting a feature wall on the opposite side of the room behind the bed. Any ideas?

Mmm .. Can the built ins be painted, too? Perhaps you could try a wallpaper with a little reflective gold woven into it. This would add warmth to the room and create brightness close to a light source at night .. From the bedside lamp. Play up the bedside lamps and bed head to create drama and you will soon forget that the room is on the dark side and just enjoy it as a great place to be.

North facing bedrooms are not easy to decorate. Personally I wouldn't try to make it lighter with colour or wallpaper. There are lots of examples of dark wall colours in north facing bedrooms, the designer Miles Redd is doing it very well. The key to your room is good lighting. Spotlights, statement chandelier, oversized table lamps on either side of the bed, a floor lamp for the dark corner would be my starting points. In terms of colour go for what makes you smile and feel good for you. Bold colours are always a good choice pink, teal, purple even navy blue. When using bold colour balance it out with lots of white. For example on your bedcover, cushions, pillow, curtains, small armchair and even a rug. Wall cover finish should be gloss rather than matt. Hi Anna, I know it's a pain inheriting an outdated room but how exciting to make it your own! I think a scandi look would really energise and brighten this space too. Take a look at two rooms we have styled in this way. Our blinds fit perfectly in bay window areas allowing extra floor space and not blocking any heat from radiators. I was thinking warm dusky pink but then I remembered I used Dulux Ocean Ripple from their Light & Space range in one of our bedrooms. It’s supposed to have light attracting particles in the paint. Hi Elena, Our recommendation would be to paint the whole room, including woodwork, in Pure Brilliant White. With one exception, the feature wall - the wall opposite the windows. The feature wall would reflect the light coming in from windows and its colour onto the rest of the room. This would alow for max. brightness while lights on. it depends what you mean by grey, the meaning of the word has got a bit lost in paint terms so it's a bit loose. What most people think of as grey is actually a very dull blue (true grey is black plus white and there is virtaully no paint on the market like that). Blue-ish cool greys will look even cooler in a North room so you then need to look at taupe greys (which contain red) such as Skimming Stone or Yellow based greys which can look slightly green. Something like De Nimes by Farrow and Ball is a lovely mid toned blue that would be warmer than a pale blue or pale grey but darker. This however would look cosier if that makes sense. Little Greene do some nice greys such as Slaked Lime (not too cool and quite neutral) and Rolling Fog which is slightly warmer. Hope this helps. It's a minefield!
