Living room ideas

I have this amazing Victorian rayburn in the living room which I'm not sure what to do with it. Paint it, or paint the walls around it?? Any ideas?

9 years agothanks. I was going remove that self which only goes half way across, and put my 50" tv on the wall above the rayburn. I was perhaps thinking of painting all the walls around to make it a feature wall. Unsure whether to go bright colours or something more traditional... I was playing around in photoshop, I don't think I'll go for Orange btw! Just an experiment

Comments (12)Hi Laura. Congratulations on the new home! Have you thought about putting the sofa on the back wall and moving the TV to where the sofa is? I think it would work nicely with the shelves. You can then add a floor lamp and picture gallery on the back wall similar to what's pictured with a tall potted plant in the other corner to make a nice focal point. I'd go for a pale grey For the walls, dulux dusted moss 2 is nice but check undertones with your sofa. Your dining chair looks more of a deep coral so would bring a little in for cushions (maybe white and coral patterned to lighten the sofa) and also some texture, a faux sheepskin is always good for a scandi look. You could then add splashes of green or blue for art etc. Some faux stems would be great on the dining table (I like cox and cox's eucalyptus in their glass bottle vase for something simple and they give height). Hard to tell from table pics but could you add an arc light to zone the dining area as you don't have any ceiling lights? Your kitchen looks great, I have to admit if it were mine though I'd be tempted to paint it a soft white and remove some of the wall units and have some shelves instead....See MoreLiving room ideas help
Comments (12)The table looks in good repair, but yes, the blue legs date it a bit. Give the legs a sand down, and paint! I think I would steer away from solid black but a dark charcoal? or white? If white you could then locate some white chairs to go with it, or a mix of chair styles painted white for an eclectic look. There venetians are a little stark, some curtains at the window ? Comments (22)From what i can see your curtains look as if they‘d work really well with setting plaster or similar. You could consider cafe shutters and as the window is split have 3 (perhaps lower than those shown, I was just trying to find a pic with more than one window). I would try losing the tie backs though as they're probably better without for eyelets. i think a deeper pink ikat lampshade would work well, as in the 2nd pic, I have a feeling this may actually be a Ben Penreath room! Personally I would have the tv next to the fire with the sofa opposite and the chair to the right of the fire. Maybe consider an upholstered footstool with a tray on top for extra seating and a place to put drinks. Comments (4)To create some cosy - run with the console table, but a narrow one along the short wall as the door opens. If that has a wall sconce light, it can be used to light the table. One in a wood would bring some warmth, so you could go a blonde or a darker wood. Part of the reason you may be feeling a lack of cosines is it is a very stark space - with tiles, no drapes and modernist light fittings - so some texture will help bring warmth. Maybe an entry rug? Or a rug under the dining table? You have a lamp there next to the dining table, it needs something larger to sit on - a sideboard? This could be a modern piece to keep with a simple aesthetic, but again I would consider wood over a metal/glass or marble piece. 9 years agoI'd keep the traditional charm of the rayburn and quirky alcoves in neutral, add a sense of cohesion and warmth with wood ledges, some nice old books and maybe a couple of wall lights. Also as suggested above by lemacassar - extending the 'chimney breast' element up to the ceiling would create a real focal area. Then bring colours in as you want with accessories - a bold rug, ceiling pendant light and some graphic prints which you can easily switch up if your preferences change over time. I've done a quick photoshop to demonstrate a neutral 'blank canvas' type version of what I mean from which you can hopefully visualise adding colours as you like to the accessories.

9 years agoThanks for your ideas everyone. whirlligig love what you've done there! I'd love to strip it down as currently the paints stopped all the doors from opening. Would be cool to actually use the main oven as a cupboard. just shows by leaving it white and adding some warmly wood/old books can make a huge difference. I think building it up to the roof may perhaps might be a struggle, only because of the fact the walls are quite bumpy, and inconsistant because of how old the building is, and the mdf add ons may make the walls look a little too perfect. My original idea was to put the tv on the wall above the rayburn, but I like it on a table to the left now, and probably is a better height for watching! I've just posted a closer look. I could go either a real traditional look or a completely opposite quirky style. But I guess I could do that with the furnishings/artwork on the walls. Don't know if many of you are aware of the style but I also like 'steampunk' ie Edison bulbs coming out of vintage instraments... feel this would work with a room like this.

9 years agoWe think it really is down to how you want the room to feel. The TV wall mounted above is a modern look and I think would justify a bold colour, as sown above we love the aqua blue/red and orange. However the rest of the room isn't appearing too modern. How is the rest of the house? I can assume with such a feature it could have a traditional feel to it. So why not be honest to what it is a - Victorian Rayburn, black?

9 years agoThanks again whirlligig, I really like the dark version. I think if I can get it to its original looking colour I'll be happy with it. And I've seen some original looking ones with gold/brass on the little details and handles. Now to figure out how best I go about doing that! I think some vintage industrial style lights and some old wood in there will really work nicely. This is a whole new project for me and the whole flat is a blank canvas like this, but I want every room to be done right. Appreciate everyone's ideas.

9 years agolast modified: 9 years agoI love the idea of incorporating the Rayburn into a steampunk scheme. I too would return it to its original black (maybe stripping back and using black metallic paint) and would add a mantle shelf. For this scheme, I would use muted tones like sepia or cream for the walls, adding splashes of dark red and/or green (think steam engine colours), perhaps in cushions on a vintage, studded leather sofa. Add quirky details with a statement clock over the mantle, some industrial lighting and a vintage trunk as a coffee table....
