Need ideas for redecorating dark and dated living area
Comments (30)You will need to move away from small incandescent light sources. Those JLP lights will be like adding candles. If you paint the ceiling white you can use a decent quality linear LED linear light source instead of those low out put spots - it would also save you lots on your energy bill. For example, this linear light comes in any RAL (colour) and a 73W 10000Lm LED version wold cost you around £290 delivered: This would be mounted where you have your current spotlights but would one of your spots delivers between 420 and 750Lm. If you had this colour matched to the beams they would blend in and your ceiling would become your light source. We do this a lot with RGB for night clubs and theatres - it creates a great ambience....See MoreCiduncan@hotmail.co.uk
Comments (1)I think, to keep in with the existing windows and the glazed door, you should go for a 3x4 or 3x3 upper part (like the top part of the fully glazed door on the left) or 2x3 like the ground floor windows. Visually, keeping the panes of glass the same size or ratio as existing will look "right". Also, what about the bottom part of the stable door having a large pane of opaque glass rather than a solid panel - it would look solid but also let in some more light? Not sure if this is possible though :) Do you have space above the door for a [transom window[(https://www.houzz.com/magazine/transom-windows-why-use-them-and-where-stsetivw-vs~170344)? That might let in more light. As it leads into a dark staircase, you could consider sun tunnels/light transmitting tubes to add more natural light - but it all depends on what's above the staircase. The part that's fixed to the roof can be quite unobtrusive....See MoreDark hall, stairs and landing paint ideas
Comments (3)When you enter the house are the stairs immediately in front of you? Where do the doors either side lead to? I have stairs directly in front of the front door (no hall) and a living room on the right. My staircase gets most of the light from the glazed front door and the glazed living room door. Changing to glazed doors can really help with lighting. Sorry, I haven’t made any suggestions for colour! I’d personally just paint it in a brilliant white first and then decide on a colour later on....See Moredark stairway how do we improve
Comments (6)So you have a big window on the landing and another at the top of the stairs, plenty of light coming in. A lighter coloured carpet would help as would changing those heavy curtains for light coloured Roman blinds to tie in with the new carpet, perhaps with a pattern. Your woodwork is already light but you could also paint the bannister too.Keeping the windows clean will also maximise the light. What kind of lighting do you currently have over the stairs?...See Morehumbs
