Ugly fireplace surround

We've just moved into our new house and are going with a neutrals and grey theme for the living room. This fireplace is an awful bronze colour. We are going to see what the manufacturers can offer at the weekend but what would you recommend we paint it or do to it as a last resort? Same colour as the walls?

I wouldn't change it. I would add a good polyurethane to give it a high gloss look. When it's lit with an orange glow inside, it will look beautiful.

I was just wondering what material the surround of the fire place is?
The neutral/grey theme for the room sounds great. There's some really good neutral paints available at the moment, I love the selection of paints Farrow and Ball have to offer via Homebase.
In regards to the fireplace I wouldn't paint it unless you know its your only option and depending on the material of the surround. If so I wouldn't paint it the exact colour of the walls, maybe a couple of shades darker to make it a feature, not something you are trying to conceal.
You could reconsider your colour scheme if its not possible to paint/change the fireplace, making the chimney wall an off white as to not clash with the bronze. You could still have parts of the room a very pale neutral grey, or channel the neutral scheme through soft furnishings and accessories.

Hi everyone! Thanks for the ideas for what to do with the fireplace. It is an original fireplace so taking it out is not an option and I really want to make a feature of it. I think your fireplace is lovely and I love the warm honey tone of the bricks. Many fireplaces aren’t symmetrical, mine isn’t. I think it would be sacrilege to cover it up. Such a lovely cosy room. If you really hate it then you could remove the bricks and plaster the wall, or remove the bricks and put in a wooden fire surround and paint that. I like Ribena‘s idea - candles or even electrical lighting can create warmth, or maybe an electric faux log burner,.

It would be helpful to see the fireplace in the context of your entire room, but I do feel the best and easiest thing to do is not to change it but dress it up/surround it with lots of good sized plants (in attractive pots). Then add artwork and mirror to chimney breast and alcoves.

Personally I think the fire looks like a Gazco Studio 1. The surround should be steel & I believe they're able to be removed and easily replaced with a different surround. If it is a Gazco, you'll have a large selection of frames.
