Thank you everyone for your great ideas! Actually, the room is not as dark as you think - the window is east facing, and we do get a good deal of sunshine through it... I think the pictures don't do the room justice. I do agree, dark furniture does make it seem very dull though. OK, here is what I am thinking at the moment... Unfortunately, the sofa does not fit quite right againt the opposite wall, neither does the love seat by the window (I've measured everything up and the sofas are of the wrong sizes). I'd like to replace the love seat with a couple of chairs (as the love seat is quite chunky, and does dominate the room as you walk in), but I can't justify spending the money on that just yet :( I am planning to buy a bigger rug (thank you for the suggestion, ren2513), I do love the white/cream as we have now, but will go for something with a bit more colour through it, and definitely replace the coffee table with a bright ottoman (thinking something along these lines at the moment http://www.marksandspencer.com/oval-button-footstool/p/p22344378001 colour Measham,Ochre)... And I'd like to move the existing rug behind the love seat. I'd also like to either match the wall paper or a few pictures on the wall to the ottoman (colour-wise) for some continuation. The ceiling lamp shade will be replaced with something a bit more original (this was fitted in a rush when we moved in, with no thought behind it!) All the speakers will go, as I don't think they look right in the room, and will be replaced with more descrete ones :) We are keen to replace the TV stand with Skovby TV unit and a display cabinet (in white oak), so a similar idea to what was suggested by Sauve :) thank you! Haven't decided on the 'behind the love seat' arrangement just yet. Thanks again for the suggestions everyone :)

If the entrance/door to this room is near the front door (as well as a glass front door as suggested above) what about a glass door into the room, (or an internal window) it can be frosted or even semi-opaque white for example to act as a window. With respect to the neighbour's driveway - if you make it a narrow or high window so ou can't look out onto them it might be ok. Worth having a chat with your local planning dept (at your local council if you are in the UK), worth going in to see them or inviting them out to have a look. From a waking up perspective I have used a sunrise lamp in the past which I preferred in winter to an alarm which uses noise. You set the time to wake up and the duration of the sunrise e.g. 30, 45, 60 mins and it slowly gets brighter until you wake up and turn it off. If you don't in time it finally rang a small alarm. The one I had was made of a special glass to mimic daylight but you can also get others made of plain white glass or maybe plastic, worth a look. What a great room! Those French doors with a view of the garden should definitely be the focal point, they are truly stunning and they are framing perfectly the garden which will look great when it's done! What I would start doing is to remove the carpet, you might already have some original wood floors under there but if not I think it could be worth investing in that. The heater is also bugging me... Maybe you could replace it or hide it behind a wooden case with similar paneling to the doors. Then I would remove the two low cupboards which make that side look a bit heavy and I suspect are not practical anyway. For the colours I would get rid of the wallpaper, repaint everything white including the ceiling and then you can start adding really subtle colours. For example I would perhaps paint the lower part of the walls (where your wallpaper is now) in a very light grey which will give a modern touch whilst not denaturing the heritage of the room. I really like the darker colour that is on some edges of the paneling of the doors and at the border with the ceiling so I would maybe choose a different colour but keep that concept which really draws attention to the original features. I would personally not add any new ones as suggested above as your room doesn't need it, it already has lots of character, Then for the layout you could, to accentuate the French doors as focal point, place two identical sofas facing each other with the space between them leading to the Frencg doors if you see what I mean. Then the rest is just accessorizing: a nice rug, some side tables and maybe a bigger pedestal-type table in front of the French doors with a big flower bouquet on top. You could choose as an accent colour (for accessories like cushions) something similar to the darker colour you chose to highlight the original features, this will tie it all in. I've just got a 760x760 shower and it's fine for us. The room is 327 x97 (they must have lost a fair bit with tiling and plumbing). My previous ensuite was a similar size with the same size shower. We fitted our old ensuite and the priority for me was a really good shower rather than a teaspoon of water over your head! I know you may look a bit mad but you could go to a showroom and try getting in a cubicle! Or see if any friends have the same size as I think you'll need the extra space for getting ready but it does obviously also depend on the height and build of your family
