House in France garden hedge query

I have bought a house in Gascony and would like to plant a hedge to act as screening ..any ideas in creating a beautiful hedge would be marvellous. The length is about 25 metres.

Without knowing how high you need it to be or what soil type is you could go for these easy to grow options which are all evergreen and hardy.... Hebe parviflora, a slow grower but suits any fertile well-drained soil. It needs a sheltered position. Has a lovely light green feathery leaves. If you are near any salty breezes then Griselinia littoralis would work. It's a fast grower and needs well drained soil in full sun. One more choice could be Elaeagnus ebbingeii very hardy, likes full sun and can be in sheltered or exposed positions. Has lovely small scented flowers. If we were planting your hedge, we would recommend irrigation.

Oh thank you..the hedge needs to grow to just over 2.3 metres tall and will have a stone wall behind it which is about 1.5 metres tall. I did consider hornbeam..

I do appreciate the suggestions ,thank you so much everyone for taking the trouble to share your ideas. I think we will go with the suggestion made by Revolutionary Gardens and create a gentle slope. I was particularly taken by the image of the buried elephant, I would probably have created what looked like a cemetery for several dinosaurs without your wise words. We have so much land around these projections that I can begin the slope at least 100 feet away on every side. For those who have suggested a table and or chairs over the offending projections, the idea makes perfect sense except for the small point that these hatches lead directly into our main sewage system and on a warm day, with the wind in a particular direction, the aroma emanating from them does rather put you off your dinner. Hope the eyesore will be a bit less overwhelming by next spring so will post some pics of how it looks then.

Is this raised border too small for bamboo or a bamboo alternative

I've got bamboo in a big half whisky barrel planter. If I remember rightly the depth was the bigger issue. I would steer clear of runners though it will escape. Even a clumping bamboo will need digging a splitting on a regular basis otherwise the roots will damage the wall. If you like the look of bamboo have a look at Nandina it's a nice alternative but a bit better behaved. Failing that I'd go with a mixed border and climbers to disguise the fence.

We bought an old Mill house 4 years ago and are still decorating and renovating. I think we always will, but absolutely no regrets! I love it! I will confess that I have made a few mistakes, which we are now fixing, as we now know what we would like and what suits the building. I completely agree with the comments on lime plaster. All of the rooms are light but soft colours and I have fallen in love with Crown and Rose Authentic Chalk paint. We have dogs and I love the way that I can clean off any small tail wag splatters and the paint looks brand new afterwards. We have lots of beams and stone, so have decided to go for a rustic but comfy look, but with a few rather French looking items, like a big French dresser in the dining room. Light walls in soft whites and creams, which don't clash too much with the different stone and woods types. I have tried other colours, but it just doesn`t really look right and ended up going back to the neutrals. These houses have low ceilings and small windows, so keeping light was an important issue for us. The colours come from the cushions, throws and soft furnishings in sage greens and warm purples. The dining room, looks stark but rustic and interesting. Currently would like to find a large rustic wood or antler chandelier for above the table. Floors downstairs are currently old school quarry tiles in half and wooden floors in the nest, with a cheeky bit of rhino vinyl floor in the main hall. The quarry tiles are original, but long term, I would love to rip up the wood/vinyl and add in flagged floors, so been bothering our suppliers about how well under floor heating may work with flag stones... :) Upstairs is thick underlay, as when they built houses in that day, they didn`t really worry about sound travel, then carpeted. Best move I have ever made!!! Even when things go wrong, I don`t really care, as I am renovating for the love of it this time, not for money! Exciting times!!

Hi Justin, thank you for taking the time to reply to our query. It is difficult to compare systems because Deceuninck have not published very much technical information about that specific product on their website, but whilst in general terms uPVC may be able to perform fractionally better for U-values than aluminium (it depends on the system), our experience is that with slide and swing doors the weather rating (water tightness, air permeability and wind loading) tend to be much lower. I would also query the information you were given about security. The reason I say that is I cannot find any reference to their slide & swing doors having been tested to PAS24 standards (Building Regs Doc Q) or Secured by Design award standards. The technology of slide and swing doors is developing quickly, but it is starting from nearly 25 years behind bifold doors so will take some time to catch up - that said they are moving along quickly and in certain circumstances offer an alternative to bifold doors.
