Need help for family room stone cladding wall.

Dear friends ,
I have a 20 ft wall on west side of my family area. I want to hang my TV ( 55" 3D ) on that wall. Can I go for some stone cladding on that wall ? Will slate stone look good ? What size stone ? Height of room is 11.5 ft. All other walls are painted pearl White. Please suggest .

Sure you can cover it with stone. I am about to have a 30' wall covered in stone for a client. Another is doing a shorter wall with stone also...including a tv. Just do a search here on houzz and you will see tons of interior walls covered in stone. These guys http://www.erthcoverings.com/Natural-Stone/Natural-Stone.html have natural stone that is perfect for your kind of application. Go to your local tile stores and I am sure they have similar products.

Would love to see a photo of your elevation that you are talking about. I would also like to see photos of the elevation's surrounding and any rooms that this room may be open to. This would allow me to see if slate is a good fit to your current elements. I hope that this makes sense, but without visuals, it is difficult for any of us to provide thoughts to your specific environment. Slate is beautiful, but it doesn't incorporate everyone's style or design elements. Also, we might have other suggestions for your to consider!

Shahina Difference between polished and honed refers to the surface finish only. Polished, of course, will have "polished" or high gloss surface. Honed is not polished, or matte finish, for a softer look and feel. Honed is not as formal looking as polished and not as slick. But veining is the same no matter what finish you select and is inherit in the stone itself. Hope that helped...

The TV could still go in the 1m nook... we've got ours on a swivel bracket by our back door and so can watch it whilst we're in the kitchen but then come the summer, the TV swivels and we can watch it from the patio so it would work in this setup for viewing when cooking! You could put a corner-style sofa with a chaise long edge, this latter part jutting out across the window (from what I can make out it's windows to the edges and doors to the centre... correct?). Opt for a smaller table which is extendable so it doesn't take up too much space but can accommodate more bodies when required.

Good morning Hazel, Here's a link to a guide on small extensions under permitted development, if you haven't already looked at. https://interactive.planningportal.co.uk/mini-guide/extensions-single-storey/0 Once you have more idea on the construction of the extension and the exact dimensions, you'll be able to properly assess the internal space you have. You are correct in saying that it wouldn't be ideal to have to walk through the living space into the extension for the dining room. The proposed extension itself may not be ideal for a living/family area once a sofa and TV are in, as this won't leave much space for an external bi-fold/sliding door. Another option to explore is moving the kitchen to the left and having the living/family room to the right hand side (where the kitchen is currently situated). This will then mean the extension will hold the dining space.

Hi Onika, Inevitably this will require a few external modifications to the house. You can have direct access from the reception room to the back garden, by installing new doors. Connecting the kitchen with this reception room will involve works to the structure. It's obvious to me that the reception room facing the street will become the study room, unless you want it to be facing garden. The utility room in the middle is not a perfect space as it's there to mainly connect the kitchen with the fourth bedroom. This can be changed with a small extension towards the garden. If the garden is big enough, you can always build an outbuilding that could serve multiple purposes from study room to utility etc. For a small fee we could develop the best layout for your study. Dear Monique,
Thanks for your reply. My this family room opens to our formal living room( size 30 x 35 ft ) in the south and dining room ( 18x 36 ft ) in the north. East side has a tall ceiling height window ( size 8x 11.5 ft ) . There is no door between dining and my family area . Family area size is about 36 x 26 ft . I want to stone clad my west wall of family. My living and dining has traditional style with crystal chandeliers . I am confused with the family space , please give some ideas . Doors and windows are White .

How would you describe your design theme? Traditional with a touch of elegance? Family Room less elegant with dining room having elegant flair? I'm using elegant with crystal chandeliers in mind. Is this right? Slate is more of an Arts & Crafts or a Rustic element. Are you wanting to stone the entire west elevation from the ceiling to the floor?
