I'm not positive this is the right place for this so please let me know if i should repost in a different forum.

I had two companies come out to measure to give me quotes on windows and I ended up with two totally different stories on what was better. im in south florida and impact windows are important because we get hurricanes. the first person that came out told me that windows that have the impact pane on the outside are better than those that have the energy pane on the outside with the impact pane on the inside. he explained that you want the stronger pane on the outside so it doesn't break in a hurricane and protects the inside pane. that sounded logical to me so i totally believed it.

but then the second person came and told me that i wanted the impact pane on the inside because the impact pane is flexible and bows and if it's on the outside it may bow under pressure and then cause the inside pane to shatter and since it's on the inside that's a problem bc presumably i will be on the inside. she said yes, the outside pane COULD break in a storm but repairing that is very affordable...whereas if the outside pane is the impact pane and it gets damaged it's VERY pricey to repair.

both of these people had access to windows with the impact pane on the inside or outside and said they could give me whichever i choose but they each had different recommendations. what do you think? do they sound full of it?? im very confused.

We can shed some light on this (we know...bad window pun). But actually, with an impact-resistant window, the industry term for the outside pane is the "sacrificial lite." That means it's definitely going to break when hit by something significant. The inside pane is made with a special laminate. If it's hit by a 2 x 4 or something, it too, will break, but the way it breaks is important. It will shatter into hundreds of small pieces that tend to hang together. The goal is to avoid having dangerous shards of glass flying around inside your home, possibly causing significant damage to people and property.

Hi Am following this thread with interest - I have windows like this throughout my house and am finding it really difficult to decide on suitable treatments. On the upside it means the house always looks light and airy! We currently have a series of temporary roller blinds downstairs which work pretty well, but in the bedrooms we have curtains - although they now cover the radiators so not keen as a long term solution. Would also like to have blackout in the two main bedrooms. Does anyone know if extra wide roman blinds are available anywhere? We'd like an unfussy look. Suggestions and pics most welcome. Thanks.

I think you'll have to go with white or whatever looks best indoors in those rooms. You can always think about getting the windows colour bonded at some point instead of replacing them. Then you can choose any colour for those inside and out! You can paint UPVC yourself - All of our windows inside are painted the same colour as the walls in those rooms so that the windows blend into the walls. They were dark brown / mahogany ( vile ) - Outside they are all sage green. If you're going to paint the frames inside which will brighten the rooms and let you have whatever colour shutters you like, use Zinsser 1-2-3 primer and then paint away.

Hi Jason! Personnally I wouldn't block it, I think that it would be a waste of money. Even if it doesn't bring enough light from the outside currently, it will still help with air circulation. And you don't even need tons of natural light in your bathroom to create a fabulous space ;) I previously designed a bathroom that doesn't even have a window. By modifying the lighting and playing with some colours it really changed the perception of the space!
