Annie Sloan vs Farrow & Ball

Hi all, we are painting our kitchen cupboards next week and the wood surround. Can you advise what's the better paint to do this with - Annie Sloan chalk paint or Farrow and Ball interior eggshell?

I believe with FB we would need to sand and prime all doors and surround whereas Annie Sloan can just be painted straight on - obviously with a bit of cleaning to get rid of grease?

If there's no need to Sand and prime with AS, is it as long lasting and good quality??

Your advice would be much appreciated

Just to add balance too - I have a F&B painted kitchen ! I don't do it my self - but get a pro in - mine gets repainted when I feel like a change more than because it needs it ! Costs a couple of days labour and the paint - so I think that's fair !
It's been white, Parma grey , blue and is currently White up top and miles breath at the bottom !

So funny! I'm planning to paint the bannister at the new house (TNH) black and am veering towards painting the treads and risers black too... I've been searching for images of black staircases on Houzz and putting them in my entrance hall ideabook. They are few and far between. In your case, I think, with your white walls, maybe the stairs white and the bannister black? (Assuming the white walls continue up the stair walls enabling the b/w contrast.) You've already put black firmly into the equation, adding some more may give more reason for the black rad cab. In my case, there is a very off-centre radiator that could so very easily have been directly opposite the front door in TNH which is rather annoying as it stuffs up the focal point. We are leaving here with every radiator covered with a cabinet - and going to TNH that has loads of radiators ...but no cabinets! Yes, the work ahead is daunting - especially since the area of Ireland we're going to is very basic and not full of DIY resources, etc. I keep thinking I'll paint TNH white - to make things simpler(!) But try as I may colour keeps wandering through my mind! Lovely to be in touch again!

Depending on how far you budget goes, I would look at adding traditional cornice and pelmet and replacing the plinth with a similar oyster colour. End panels for wall units could also be replaced / added. Some chessboard style tilling in 3 colours would also bring out the walls. It's hard to tell but is the oak surround also on the wall units? I haven't checked your location but this is something we can help with

Can you add some pics so we can see the start point ?! Sounds lovely as it is - but then I'm a fan of country ! Combination colours can give a more modern look ? ie moles breath lower cabinets and Purbeck top cabinets or white even ?! - Other ways could be to paint the kitchen cabinets all white then have a more zingy wall colour ?!

OnePlan - thank you for drawing my attention to this - and what a beautiful kitchen you have. Right up my street!

In response to the question - I don't believe there's a right or a wrong paint to use. It's ultimately down to personal preference and the type of finish you're looking for.

I've used both AS and F&B with great results. Provided that you use the paints correctly (giving them a good stir / applying the paints with a good quality brush or roller) it's ultimately down to the prep (and in the case of AS paint, how you seal it).

F&B is excellent and as you can see, OnePlan's kitchen has been beautifully painted using F&B. My kitchen, on the other hand, has been painted using AS with equally great results.

As part of my business I will also paint kitchens. If you want a classy, clean look, I suggest you use F&B. If, however, you want to add some depth and character why not try AS.

I use AS paint on all of my stand alone pieces of furniture - I love the colour range (it's completely unique), I love the chalky texture and I especially love the way I can create an aged patina with it, giving the illusion that the furniture (or whatever it is I'm painting) hasn't just been painted. It's what gives my furniture a totally bespoke look.

When using F&B follow the instructions to a tee. With AS it isn't always as simple as the instructions suggest. Without going too much into the in's and out's of using AS on different surfaces, if you do decide to use it you'll need to consider the following:

1. If the surface of the wood is particularly shiny, I suggest you lightly sand the surface before painting to create a 'key' which will allow better adhesion of the paint to the wood.

2. If the wood has knots / dark varnish and you're wanting to use a light coloured paint, my advice is to prime before painting or there's a chance the knots will come through / the varnish will bleed into the paint.

3. As for sealing the paint, I would use a water\-based varnish as opposed to wax as the varnish will stand up better to everyday wear and tear.

This may sound like a lot to consider, however, if you use the F&B, you will still need to prep the surface before you paint, so ultimately, the workload will be pretty much the same bearing in mind that with AS, one / two coats is sometimes all you need.

If you're still not sure, why not get a tester board and a tester pot of F&B and AS and try them both out and see which you prefer.

Any good paint can be mixed to match colours of choice. Light sand and Zinnser Bin primer is excellent for solid cupboards and have used on veneers also ...very tough finish. A lot of work though.

Second Zinsser products, I think they are essential. Also Little Greene do oil eggshell, F&B don't. I find F&B eggshell drags so always use it with Floetrol paint conditioner.

Yes, F&B eggshell was lovely, once upon a time, good coverage ,beautiful and long-lasting. Unfortunately since they removed the oil to make it water based it is not a great product. We have Colortrend in Ireland which has great products and is a match for F&B with beautiful colours.I think it must be like Little Greene?

Annie Sloan does need sealing or else it can feel a bit rough to the touch. Not what you want as you touch/handle kitchen units lots, but the colour is unique. Remember you can colour match at Dulux etc and this way reduce cost but still have a good paint and coverage.

I just want it to add one more thing in here, that the Little Green eggshell it's got the best matt finish i've ever seen before as an oil based paint. There are number of paint brands, so far for me the best paint is F&B with reach finish and full of character colours. Obviously some say that F&B doesn't last for long as it;s water based so easy to scratch etc.

All depend on previously prepared surfaces, with careful preparation work and appropriate product selection like primers undercoats and fillers all combined together brings superb finish.
