Comments (9)Restore all ceilings, floors and doors, but keep the walls somewhat 'neutral'. People love original features, but most of them are overwhelmed with the amount of patterns. Use solid colors (not necessarily white/beige) to make the features and furniture stand out more. Attention grabbing. Find an expert electrician (with experience in old buildings!!) as there's plenty of wiring to be worked into those walls. And an engineer that can help you with the best location for bathrooms. Look into bathroom modules/pods, as you don't want to ruin those lovely ceilings with too many partitions (they can be 210cm tall for example). Plus a really well thought through lighting plan. Comfy beds and (white/champagne) bedding. Consider keeping the architectural features art-nouveau (soft and swirley), while using more art-deco furniture (straight, glam, functional, geometric), because it'll create a more modern feel. Look up many images, as both styles are still quite popular and/or well documented. Comments (14)The fireplaces in the bedrooms are decorative. Living room is a real open fire and the study (with the wooden fireplace surround) has been converted to gas. We were lucky to acquire three of the fireplaces from the house directly across the road. They cost £500 which I thought was a bargain until I realised they would cost me £2,500 to restore them! The wooden surround was in the house when we bought it and we had to buy the cast iron insert. The surround is actually mahogany, I'm not actually that keen on it but couldn't bring myself to rip it out! I would get to know the neighbours and see what original features they have in their houses. Be careful with architectural salvage, for example salvaged doors if you need them have often been dipped in acid and the glue joints tend to fail after a while. We employed a conservation architect to restore the house and I felt his design was one which would stand the test of time. We had folding doors in our last house. These timber doors are bespoke made and look/feel quality. Just a bit more sophisticated....See MoreArt Deco fireplace dilemma
Comments (37)The problem is the stark cold white walls against the soft warm browns of the fireplace. I don't recommend going all beige but try colours from the same warm spectrum as the fireplace and I think you'll find it looks more natural in the space. Also, the round candles don't work with the squares and oblongs of the fireplace; find other accessories that enhance rather than scream at the shapes and colours and that could make a huge difference. So could a mirror or picture above it - it would shift the focus so the fireplace doesn't dominate. Work with it, not against, then judge it. These fireplaces are handsome; trying to pretty them doesn't work....See More1908 Arts & Crafts House Interior Door Dilemma
Comments (14)Well 6 years have flown by and I still have a door dilemma! We have decorated the hall/stairs/landing and replaced the cloakroom and WC door with oak ledge and brace doors to match upstairs as advised on here. We still detest the white Georgian looking doors which don't match anything else in the house but don't want a solid ledge and brace as it would make an already dark hallway even darker. Could anyone suggest an oak glazed style door and handle that would tie in with the ledge and brace please? Thanking you all in advance....See MoreJo Lucas
