Georgian house

We have just bought a Georgian style house and are undecided about window dressings. Ideally, we would like privacy however not be completely in the dark. We have toed and froed about venetian, black out, roman blinds also curtains but just don't want to make the wrong decision. We have quite contemporary looking rooms, so don't want anything too old fashioned. Any suggestions would be most welcome. Many thanks Maggi x

Why don't you try plain,simple curtains that sit just on the floor level, these can be closed very easily to allow you privacy when it's wanted or needed, nothing fancy plain, simple and classic

Thanks jackcrispesq. We definitely want to use curtains on some of the windows in the house so your idea would look great on those, thanks. However, we have an office on the ground floor, at the front of the house and would like a little privacy during the day, without completely closing ourselves off from the world. Any ideas?

I am looking at purchasing a Georgian house which includes a large summerhouse (I think?? I'm not British) with south facing arch Windows and very high ceiling. Dear Vicky, I'm sorry you seem to be at the hand of some particularly dense builders, but this has made me quite cross. Let's get this straight, they took away everything that was blocking the chimney, then blocked it back up again without addressing the edge problem and most likely charged you for it?? All they have to do is chisel the edge away, which would in no way effect the Chimney Construction, then get a plasterer to skim it over and put a piece of skirting in at the bottom, it will then look like it was never there. It's pointless trying to make it look pretty. You would have been better off to leave it unblocked, and to rectify the edge problem, thus keeping a period feature. Those builders would have lasted 2 minutes with me!!!

Maybe something like the below - there's a few different ideas depending on the style of the room. You should probably decide whether you want to draw attention to the light, or whether it should just blend in and sit nicely with the rest of the room? Hope this helps! Hi again, a more expensive option would be to use slatted shutters, kind of 'new England' style. Failing this you could have the most exposed areas of the windows frosted, I know this sounds awful but in actual fact it can look very elegant. I spend a lot of time in Venice Italy where I live in a ground floor apartment which is very unusual and suffer from tourists straining to press their faces against my front room windows due to them thinking its a shop, not nice can I tell you. This was the perfect solution and in the evening I can close my curtains if I choose. Hope this helps a bit for you, for I know how important privacy is.

Thank you, the frosted glass sounds like a lovely idea, we'll have to look into this further. We did get a slatted shutter quote and it was rather expensive and then we had the quandary of whether we shutter all the windows and if not whether it would look odd. We'll definitely look into the frosted window idea. Many thanks.

If you are concerned about UV damage you can also get specialist UV blinds and film that is applied to the windows.
