Need help on paint colour/theme- new build!

Hi all,

I have been having a good nosey for some time and love how helpful everyone is and all the different advice.

We are due to move in to a new build property in May and I have no idea where to start on paint/decoration.

What works best? Should I theme it and use one/two colours throughout or different colours for each room?

The only things we have decided on so far is flooring- ceramic tiles for bathrooms, kitchen and hall and carpet for everywhere else though no idea what colour!

Where do I start......!!!

Hi. You could try picking 3 or 4 colours that work together for the whole house and then accent each room with a different colour. The accent colours could also coordinate if you wanted. It's normally easier having the walls and floors as neutral colours then accent with cushions, chair or wallpaper for example. I assume the woodwork and ceilings are already done in white? Or alternatively you could find a piece of furniture or something that you love and plan the whole house around that! You may also find that you like a style of decor ie scandi or french or something and choose the colours to suit that style! I think the house flows better when the colours coordinate however you quite often see a room done completely the opposite way and love it!

Hi Minne, so sorry only just seen you comment thanks so much for this.

I like the idea of using three colours throughout then possibly accent colours then it all flows. I'm a big fan of pavilion grey (f and b) and I like duck egg blue, what other colour do you think would go with these best?

Ah... if you haven't moved in, stay off paint for a while. They can hide minor leaks! Pressure test the bathroom before painting. You will find it a lot less boring during summer! If you are ordering shutters, a non-white one might be a good option to start with. If you don't want to invest at such early stage, look up 247blinds, I always get my blinds from them and the blinds are very easy to install. Hope it helps :)

Oh man, I decided to brave Ikea on a Saturday and sad to say that Martin was quite uncomfortable! I mean, the seat itself was fine and nothing a nice seat cushion couldn't fix, but the back rest felt like its designed so that you'll have to sit perfectly upright to be remotely comfortable in it. I suppose its good for posture if nothing else, but not something one wants for a dining chair! The Svenbertil was a lot more comfy for about the same size, though a bit more expensive. I was thinking of perhaps a couple of smaller side tables instead of an actual coffee table. Not sure yet. I think I'll have to wait until the sofa gets delivered and I have it in the space before I can really decide. Generally not a fan of glass table surfaces as I can get a bit obsessed over fingerprints and glass just attracts them! I really liked this coffee table when I saw it in the showroom, then I saw the price tag. Yeah, visually on the plan I don't think the long table would work that well in terms of the flow of the space, and I think I'm going to stick with a round one. Surprisingly, the space seemed to be able to fit a D100+/- 5cm relatively well after I folded some towels and tape out the area. The Ikea one you pointed out seems ideal in terms of size, but being all white, seemed a tad boring... though I suppose I could have different chairs to mix it up a bit... a pair in white and a pair in oak. Hmm...

For what it's worth I agree with Jonathan. Your palette is neutral and can be jazzed up with any colours really. Which of course makes it harder as there's so much choice ! He's put that great idea forward of finding a patterned item you love as a starting point and then picking a colour/colours from there. I think that would definitely help. I planned my eventual lounge colour scheme around a large painting I'd bought in Vietnam .... lol Love the grey sofa too. Nice one :)

Thanks for all your comments, lots of food for thought which we will consider carefully. I like the idea of an electric fire but my husband is a pyromaniac so would only consider a wood burner!! The suggestion of changing the position to the wall by the TV is one we will look into, it may not be possible as the living room is a single storey extension so I’m not sure about the flue. The house will definitely be warm enough without the need of a fire but there’s something lovely about having a fire, plus we want to add character to what could be a very modern, clinical new-build. I wasn’t aware you could get rotating stoves so we’ll definitely look into those. Thanks again.

Hi. No worries! You could try a dusky pink, would work with both of these colours although that may be giving it a french feel! I would definitely add an off white though maybe strong white from f and b? You could also use a 4th colour and add either a lighter or darker shade of the grey for some contrast to use in feature walls etc. Once you're in, look at the light in all of the rooms to see what will work best

Here's my advice, don't even think about doing it all at once, it's a nightmare. Start in your kitchen and living area and really focus on a three colour focus, a neutral, mid colour and a highlighter depending on your taste. I'm currently doing my area in grey/ green/teal. Then when you are living in it, take your time and develop the theme into the next room because as you live in it , you can decide do you like it and then perhaps vary the tones up and down or change the proportions of the colours and textures. Spend time looking through websites and catalogues and just don't jump at the first thing you see. I have looked at Magnolia walls now for five years and eventually as I worked through each room it became more enjoyable and less of a headache and I could manage it better rather then one big mammoth task.
