Please HELP! Decorating the Living Room...
Comments (20)Thank you everyone for your great ideas! Actually, the room is not as dark as you think - the window is east facing, and we do get a good deal of sunshine through it... I think the pictures don't do the room justice. I do agree, dark furniture does make it seem very dull though. OK, here is what I am thinking at the moment... Unfortunately, the sofa does not fit quite right againt the opposite wall, neither does the love seat by the window (I've measured everything up and the sofas are of the wrong sizes). I'd like to replace the love seat with a couple of chairs (as the love seat is quite chunky, and does dominate the room as you walk in), but I can't justify spending the money on that just yet :( I am planning to buy a bigger rug (thank you for the suggestion, ren2513), I do love the white/cream as we have now, but will go for something with a bit more colour through it, and definitely replace the coffee table with a bright ottoman (thinking something along these lines at the moment http://www.marksandspencer.com/oval-button-footstool/p/p22344378001 colour Measham,Ochre)... And I'd like to move the existing rug behind the love seat. I'd also like to either match the wall paper or a few pictures on the wall to the ottoman (colour-wise) for some continuation. The ceiling lamp shade will be replaced with something a bit more original (this was fitted in a rush when we moved in, with no thought behind it!) All the speakers will go, as I don't think they look right in the room, and will be replaced with more descrete ones :) We are keen to replace the TV stand with Skovby TV unit and a display cabinet (in white oak), so a similar idea to what was suggested by Sauve :) thank you! Haven't decided on the 'behind the love seat' arrangement just yet. Thanks again for the suggestions everyone :)...See MoreIdeas for decoration of new living room
Comments (7)THIS IS A REALLY NICE ROOM. I LIKE THE BEAM AND FIREPLACE. IF YOU LIKE WARM AND TRADITIONAL THE WHOLE ROOM COULD HAVE GONE RED, BUT YOU NEED TO USE THE RIGHT RED, I WOULD SUGGEST USING FIRED EARTHS MADDER RED IN ACRYLIC. THE COLOUR HAS A PINK UNDERTONE AND IS SO CLASSY, USING ACRYLIC GIVES A CLASSY SHEEN WHICH REFLECTS LIGHT OFF THE WALLS. I WOULD PAINT THE FIREPLACE WHITE. I WOULD KEEP THE SOFA'S GET LAURA ASHLEY CUSHIONS AND SOME NICE THROWS FROM TK MAXX. I WOULD LAY ENGINEERED LIGHT OAK OR LAMINATE FLOOR, THIS WOULD AGAIN BOUNCE LIGHT. BUY A PRETTY LIGHT FITTING AND PUT FULL LENGTH SHEER CURTAINS AT WINDOW, IKEA HAVE SOME GREAT ONES. PAINT TABLE WHITE. IF YOU DONT WANT RED GO COASTAL COTTAGE WITH A SEA SIDE VIBE WITH BLUE AND WHITES. LAURA ASHLEY COASTAL STYLE WOULD SUIT THE SPACE WITH ANY COLOUR YOU LIKE. BUT EITHER WAY CELEBRATE THE ROOMS COTTAGE VIBE ITS SUPER EN-VOGUE AT THE MOMENT. GOOD LOOK....See MoreLiving room decor ideas
Comments (7)True greys made with white and black are very difficult to live with but the Grey paints available have a different quality such as brown, red or blue. So Grey could be just right..... you just have to get the right neutral. Given that you have a mink sofa I would be looking at the Farrow and Ball website to find a match and look at their suggestions for colour combinations. I suspect the sofa will sit comfortably next to setting plaster, Elephants Breath or skimming stone. The last contributor showed images that at least on my screen seem to illustrate that some contrast helps make the room look sophisticated and an accent such as the pink shown sit well with a neutral with a red quality....See MoreHelp with living room decor please :)
Comments (8)All it really needs is something on the walls (love the arch mirror by the way). I love the decor colour you have chosen - it just needs a lift. So symmetrical mirrors would work, but maybe in a darker colour? Artwork is always good, whether a canvas, photos or prints. One large canvas or a gallery wall of photos over the sideboard would look good. You have a mustard yellow throw, so how about using that colour more in the room, say with cushions and artwork? Lots of colours go with that warm grey and I also think black can lift it like your lamp and console table. I agree that the tv is too high (neck ache!) but I also understand the wiring is probably chiselled into the wall, so ripping the stone tiles is probably not an option! I don’t think it will take much to jazz up this lovely room....See Morekieranacrowley
