Can I incorporate mahogany furniture bookcase, occasional tables etc.

Some of my furniture is solid mahogany and I would like to keep it. Settee and chairs duck-egg blue with gold stripes. How to freshen the look - thought of white walls?

A chalky white could look good. What way does the room face? A pic would be good. You may also want to add more of the duck egg on the walls. Or alternatively a pale linen or biscuit colour could work. What's on the floor?

If you Google 'Maison Real Estate NI' - Sales page 18 - 11 Grove Terrace - you will see my furniture. I am not taking the curtains with me. New home faces South, floors are wooden.

I've got quite a lot of furniture second hand, including both dressers (although the top half of one has been repurposed as a tall table/stand of sorts), a bed, mirrors, tables, a conservatory three piece bamboo suite (£50) and ikea bar stools. Also inherited a tall pine chest of drawers and one half of the bunk bed I slept in as a child. My parents are always telling me to let it go but I don't see why I should- I have a lot of memories associated with it and an idea to turn it into a mezzanine style bed to free up floor space in a small bedroom.

I had a similar situation in a house I moved into years ago. I did a quick fix of painting all of the walls, woodword and the cupboards the same shade of cream. Sounds a bit OTT but it really knocked back the cupboards, which in all honesty are not something you want to make a feature out of, and created a calmness to the whole space. In your case, I would go for an off white so that the gang plug wires, radiator pipes and covers hiding the wires for the extractor fan etc., are disguised as much as possible -- that will tie in with the palest of the tiles in the splash back, and then you will have a pretty basic colour scheme of a very place colour and the dark worktop, fireplace and floor, which will stand out more. I think you need more storage with doors -- that bookshelf isn't doing anything for the kitchen. If you could get something in there that could hide lots of clutter -- even if just something cheap from IKEA, that would help greatly. Or work something around the filing cabinet that you have? A huge cheap mirror over the fireplace would bounce some light around too. If you don't want to go for undercupboard lighting, and if you have enough plug points, how about some lamps on the worktop, especially at the FF end with a floor standing lamp at the end with the chair. For the table, I would go for a table cloth and reupholster the chairs if they are not to your taste. A new blind in a much fresher colour would be great. Depending on the colour of your filing cabinet (if you use it), I think a petrol blue could add a nice vintage vibe to the chimney breast, and make more of a feature of it. I would try and go down a vintage/slightly industrial route rather than country. You may have some stuff lurking around that you could use, once you have got the base colours right -- currently it just feels a little cluttered and a bit of a mish mash. Best of luck. Hi Katie. I do like the furniture you've chosen, as I said previously I would personally struggle to arrange furniture on a flat ŵall without corners, alcoves etc! I think it might be an idea to create a new post so others may be encouraged to respond without reading through previous comments. It may potentially work if you were to move the tv unit to the right. Have a floor lamp to the left of the unit and the chair angled in front of the lamp. Perhaps have a long piece of art or set of 2/3 to the right of the tv with maybe a plant stand or something and then the chinese cabinet. Do play around with the height of things though. I know you've looked before but I really think you need an area rug to zone the living space. Re kitchen not sure of your current thoughts but have you thought of a peninsular coming off that right ŵall within the kitchen? If you were to move the dining table perhaps a couple of accent chairs and table for the bay to keep your husband happy?!

I think curtains similar to the previous owner would work if you keep the colour or background colour close to the wall colour. It's hard to find pictures of a bay with a lowered ceiling without shutters etc but you could also have a pelmet and curtains on the main wall outside the bay or have curtains on the main wall maybe with romans on the window. If you take the curtains higher than the bay ceiling it will make the windows appear visually taller. There are lots of rooms with the coffee table much further away however as you actually want to use the tables for tea etc you may want to keep the 45cm gap but have wider coffee tables. My table is 44cm away (to be precise!) and I couldn't reach much past that comfortably TBH. I would try it! I've just attached 2 pics showing the sofas overlapping the chimney breast and not to see what you think. The chairs in the bay will be fine if the main seating area is zoned with a rug. I've seen your other posts re David Linley, his silhouette chair is rather lovely!

It looks very cute. If the new place is south facing, I would leave painting until you've been in a little while just to check out the light. It could be that duck egg would work better to cool things. Your sofas are very subtle so I don't think it would be too much. Another idea is to build on the gold with the White, if the room isn't too bright. My mum has this paper from laura Ashley which is really subtle, the background is off white so you could paint 3 walls with this or something similar as a feature wall.

I like this wallpaper very much and thanks for the suggestion. This would also suit the mahogany bookcase and occasional tables.
