If you can spend some money, how about wainscotting down the stairs, still keep the paint neutral but would add interest. And/or pull off the carpet and add wood stair treads with a nice patterned runner. Or for just plain impact replace the tile on the landing with some colourful pattered tile. You could use some expensive tile since the area is so small. I was thinking sort of a Spanish flair. And replace the hand rail with something more substantial and paint it out. :-)

Hello, In my opinion it could work if you select items carefully. I have collected some images for your inspiration, on the second one there is a patterned carpet which reminds me of victorian tiles, the dark wooden floor looks just amazing with the exposed brick wall as they are almost the same colour. However that interior is contemporary style considering the artworks on the wall. If I was in your case probably I would have the floor painted in dark, I would get a neutral colour carpet or a carpet with similar style to the one on the second image. StJames Design Interiors

The floating staircases are called "cantilever" staircases, they generally require a structural wall because they are steel plates bolted to the wall and clad in whichever timber you like and most popular balustrade would be glass, so they will not suit all house types, the split level staircase, with the landings are easier to produce and can fit in most house types and are still very contemporary, I am also a fan or the curved staircases because I understand the work involved but i would suggest the curved staircase would be more suited to a traditional house type.

Having lived with the carpet in the house when we bought it, the time had come to replace, refresh...... change. Having seen photos of ideas using patterned wallpaper and patterned adhesive film on stair risers, I looked on Houzz. We love spanish tiles sodecided to use those on the risers and carpet fitted on the treads and around the nose of the stairs. Whenever I set my heart on something specific its usually out of stock, out of fashion or too expensive. So we expected a long and tedious journey to find acceptable tiles and also considered how many different patterns we might need. Imagine our surprise when in only the 2nd warehouse we visited here in Newcastle there was a floor panel of spanish tiles. Greater surprise followed however when I learned that there were not only more than 75 different patterns but that the contents of each box would be random!! Deep intake of breath...... However, there was clearly coordination in the colours; soooo... instead of calculating by pattern we bought by number of tiles required with extra allowance for flexibility of design arrangement. In two staircases we have scope for rearrangement depending upon what the boxes contained. I spread the contents of 7 boxes across the lounge floor, sorted them to some extent into piles and colour groups then set about arranging them into groups of 5 for each riser. The tiles were then trimmed, fixed on backing boards and are now in place.
