Quality of bi-fold doors

Hi. Wondering if anyone has opinion on the different quality of aluminium bifold doors avaliable? We're building an extension in an area that will receive lot of weather. 5m opening with 4 panels. Looking at Solarlux which are imported as units from Germany but are quite expensive, Express bifolds are large scale manufacturer and reasonably priced, Schoco are german parts but fabricated in UK. It's v hard to consistently compare quality to know if price differences are justified. Thanks.

Weathering shouldn't be a problem as they're aluminium. We usually go to the showroom, and the place where the fabricate the frames, just to see what quality we are dealing with. One thing i would point out is that, in your dilemma you mentioned the door will be split into 4 panels (4 leaf door). The reason i bring this up, is that an even leaf bi-fold door. You sometimes struggle to get a slave door. This means you will have to open 2 of the 4 doors to get access in or out. Where as a 5 leaf (or an odd #) will allow a slave. this is due to the hinge system on bi-folds restricting the use of a single door. Sorry if this is a problem, or i've just give you a load of useless info. Good Luck =]

Thanks Mumaris. On weather I'm worried about quality of seals, runners etc. so there are no draughts/leaks as they wear. I've heard horror stories. Any experience of some fitted in the past? We know about the odd/even due to a story on Houzz :-) Express are offering a 3/1 split and Solarlux a 3/1 or 2/2 split to get around it as this will be the most used door into the house. 5 panels would be too much frame.

Seen this and given the date i think you will have sorted. But anyway..... Th idea of sliding folding doors is great. The technical quality has got much better over the years and they seal so well - better now than sliding (except if you spend huge amounts of money) They stack smaller (and therefore can blend more) than large folding/hinged. My view would be that you should have a smaller hinged door somewhere close to for quick/easy access

It all depends whether your doors are still on order or you've had them fitted. Origin Bifolds have a fantastic selection of bifolding door blinds that work not just with their doors but all bifolding doors. They're available manual, automatic and solar controlled. Highly recommend them. Your other option is integral glass blinds that is blinds housed between the panes of glass of your double glazed units. There are only a few manufacturers of these the for reliability and quality you need to shop around. Pellini are the worlds largest designer of these blinds and they are made by their approved manufacturers, Morley Glass of Leeds being one in the UK and the biggest. Visit most quality double glazing showrooms and its the Morley product you'll probably see. With these blinds, quality is everything - you really do get what you pay for. There is no immediate drawback to these blinds other than some may find them more expensive when budgeting for their bifolds but the benefits they provide are excellent. The integral blinds, between glass blinds, integrated blinds or however they may be referred to are in a hermetically sealed unit. You can't get to them, you can't clean them - that is the purpose of them. The result is blinds that don't get in the way, blinds that don't need cleaning and when closed you can still enjoy the great appearance of your bifolding doors without obscuring them. In the unlikely event that the blinds fail, you have to replace the whole glass with the blind as it is one component. It's also worth knowing that these blinds can be fitted to existing windows and doors. If you have older bifolding, sliding or french doors and even windows, there is no reason why you can't have integral blinds if you want them. As long as the unit is 24mm or wider, it should be fine. It'll mean new glass fitted with blinds. Integral blinds fitted in the latest generation glass could even help to make your older windows far more energy efficient as well! Hi There are many bi-folds on the market today and they all have very subtle differences, but from a quality point of view they are all very good having passed various stringent test procedures ... Smarts 1000 series bi-folds have finger safe gaskets, a six point locking mechanism on the traffic door (with a lever/lever handle) and a meeting point of 132mm They have been in production for many years so are tried and tested having been installed in thousands of homes. If someone is telling you they are not very good, they are probably trying to get you to consider an alternative that they can supply ... but if you are still not convinced asked them to explain exactly what is wrong with them in their opinion and then speak to Smarts direct and an alternative builder/installer.

Excellent. Thanks for the visual. Always helps as builders are only at the foundation stage at the moment! 28m3 of concrete pumped on the site last week as our house built on higher ground so extension has to match ground level and we're adding a first level extension too. A long way to go but take each day at a time. No more projects for you then?!

From all our suppliers we have not had an issue come back to us. as for leaks the gaskets should always sort this problem unless not properly fitted. when closed the doors will be fully waterproof. and when open any water that gets into the track will filter through weep holes located underneath the frame and out onto the cill. I guess the horror stories are from ill fitted doors or poor fabrication. like I said we spend time sourcing our manufacturer and supplier so problems are extremely rare. as for the even door panels I just like to make people aware before they buy. glad to hear you have a work around on this. the 2/2 door option woukd mean the locking mechanism is in the center. im not sure how the seals would hold as we havnt fit one to this spec.

Hi CK,

It looks like Munaris knows exactly what they are on about when it comes it bifold doors. One question I have when you talk of the type of weather you get... Are you in a costal location?

If you are, you will need to have a marine finish applied in order to withstand the harsh effects of salt on the components and aluminium...
