Patio doors - privacy options

I am about to embark on a project combining my kitchen and dining room and changing a large window to patio doors. Because of the layout these doors will face the front of our house where our main garden is. We don't get much passing traffic but I would like to be able to maintain some privacy when we choose. I have seen the doors with intergrated blinds but wondered if there were any other options people were aware of or had used? Thanks

Reflective sheeting which sticks to the window
Of a day time from the outside its like a mirror and from the inside you can barely notice it
Then of an evening put the blinds down

Hi there, We offer blinds for our Garden rooms which allow you to still use the blinds when the door is open or closed. Great for giving privacy and letting in as much light as you like. These ones are from Silent Gliss and are manually operated. You can order the remote controlled ones too. There are even blinds out there which you can work from an App on your Smart phone, while you are on holiday! Genius!

The reason that you're dad is telling you this is because of the sizes of the doors. Each door will be less than 3ft wide, and ordinary sliding doors do not slide back completely behind the other, therefore, the gap that you walk through to get outside will be impeeded, probably by around 10-12 inches. When you take into consideration the width of the frame on both sides, your gap will be tiny, i'm hazzarding a guess at somewhere in the realm of 20-24 inches. Of course it is possible, you can have them whatever size you like. Just ask the window company what gap you'll be left with to walk through ! Other sliding doors ( the expensive ones ) - push out then slide over, making your gap larger. If you can afford it, then bi-folds will work, other than that two lovely large patio doors that open out mounted toward the outer edge of the building so that they fold as flat a possible agains the outside walls. We put these on one of our builds, and it's fabulously light and airy inside and the doors open a long way out and back These are the sort that you mean, and we have put them on builds, but you end up having to turn slightly sideways to go through them because of the diminished gap!

Voile blinds will let a lot of light in and aid privacy Wooden tape blinds look like shutters from the outside and are quite trendy. Also the weight of them means that you don't particularly need to worry about the blinds flapping when opening and closing doors. You can have the blinds and tapes in a multitude of colours. We have them on our spa Also, If allowable, for better privacy as the patio doors open on to a car park, maybe some sort of screen ie a Glass Ballustrade for outside. That way you can open the doors and not bee seen.

Thank you for your feedback @Valerie Markus - we decided to be safe and went with standard bi-folds - they are proven and have less moving parts to go wrong, so hopefully less maintenance.

Hello,

If your patio doors are uPVC, blinds in a PerfectFit frame could be a fantastic option. This is where a frame clips into your window frames and becomes an integral part of your door, with the blinds sitting inside. This means you can throw open your doors, and the blinds won't sway in the breeze as with free-hanging styles. Below is a close-up of how this style works.

Alternatively, if you doors aren't uPVC, I've attached a couple of photos below which demonstrate some other styles you might like to try.

Hi Lyndi - we think - of course - that shutters are the smartest solution visually, and also are great for privacy, as you can choose to have them completely closed, open the slats to let some light in and let you see out, or of course open them right up to let the sun stream in.
