I'd do exactly as Jonathan has done on the ground floor. The first floor can be re-configred in a miriad of ways depending on whom you wish to afford it to ie;- The boys and the Nanny, I'd still try for 3 bed, and En-Suite and a main bathroom. I think that whomever is using it, then you'll need an En-Suite either for yourselves or your Nanny. So something like this may work well. The loft is a whole different kettle of fish. 2 metres is okay - you can stand up in there. I'd certainly get rid of the pointless utility room and turn it over to storage as you have 3 boys, you're bound to need quite a bit. It's possible that you could re-arrange the entrance slightly and donate the long thin area over to a playroom, giving them more space to play indoors.

As I've got such great commenters on here :) can I get your thoughts on something else please (this room is proving somewhat problematic!). the room is really narrow so I'm looking at this concrete sink, albeit a bit bigger than shown, which will sit on a steel vanity I'm having made (although the basin will also be wall supported). The basin is 350mm deep however the taps I've found that are in budget project 200mm. What are your thoughts both aesthetically and practically? Ideally I think the tap should probably sit in the middle of the sloped part. Btw, it only took 5 years but I finally realised that the rest of the shower room floor had been raised....

Hi all, I've seen the below on another forum but as it's an old thread, I'm unfortunately not getting any response. So wondering if anyone here can help! Has anyone done a loft conversion as per the below?? "I have done many loft conversions and gain 4 inches of head height by using the existing 4 inch floor joists (instead of new 8 inch joists as is the normal specification) and doubling up each joist with C24 4x2s and adding a flitch in the middle as a sandwich. This gives you the strength required but gains you 100mm in head height. No need to lower the floors. All building control and engineer approved. The flitches tend to be 8-10mmx100mm with staggered bolt holes using single sided TP connectors. I've done this maybe 8-10 times, engineer designed, building control passed. Every one with a dormer. It is designed to take the load of a dormer, in conjunction with using 3x 152x152 section steels. Two outer steels have the dormer walls sitting on them so you don't lose head height because of them. The centre steel has the flitched beams sitting within the webbing and going 50cm into the spline wall below. And a ridge beam of course." Thanks so much

I can’t see from the photo if the end of the bed protrudes beyond the slope, so why don’t you turn the bed around so the head is where the end of the bed is now, then put up a shelf/cabinet pointing into the room to use as a bed head for books etc. just a thought, it could look good depending on the finish. The same type of idea as a console table behind a sofa if you follow my drift.
