Hi, I'm changing the curtains for this large reception area. What color & fabric would you recommend? There are 6 large French windows. Would printed velvet in a deep gold fabric be overkill?

The fact you ask would answer your own question. Go for plain linen that is overprinted in gold. Have you seen Ian Sanderson fabrics. Other similar ones are available.

I would stay with the same colour for all walls as it will make your house flow from one room to the other. Agree with Brandi, keep your ceiling white, always look fresh. Add plain curtains and play around with colours in the cushions and acessories. depends on what colours you love. Try to stay with 3 colours. Maybe use the 2 different hues by painting a acsent wall with one rather than the ceiling.

When there's no room one side the solution can be to just have one curtain draped beautifully to the other side where there is room for overlap and finial, then it won't look odd to have the pole end fixed to the wall. Also looks good if you use a pelmet with a single curtain as the pelmet distracts the eye even more from the lack of symmetry.

Hi Kate. It looks a nice room. You only have a couple of pics in your ideabook so there's not much to go on in terms of style and colour. Maybe go for something like the first pic however with a pale grey paint with a blue/lavender undertone on the walls (which your sofas appear to have) and also paint the radiators the same colour. You don't mention if you need privacy, if not, I'd go for Roman blinds hung outside the recess in the wall colour to make the room feel bigger/taller. Similar to the pic id add navy, white and deep mauve cushions and a throw mixing texture (include some velvet!) and pattern. If you add brass for lamps etc it will add warmth in addition to some green for a plant and flowers for the coffee table. This may be a no no (!) but a light grey cowhide rug may work (without markings) to avoid rug "rules". I also like the panelling in the first pic and you could use wallpaper panelling on one wall to the same effect if you're on a budget. The last 2 pics are just really showing how a cowhide rug and panelling could work in an elegant scheme with industrial touches. Depending on layout I might remove the shelves and add a huge mirror over the dining table although ideally it would be on the long wall to make the room feel wider. Dining tables do look good against the back of sofas which may potentially (!) work if your sofas were opposite each other on the short walls and perhaps the door opened the other way but then I'm not sure where the tv would go!

Should work I reckon. I like the curtains above, I think the sparkly silver horizontal band echoes the throw you have so they’ll complement nicely. With the fairy lights I mentioned I had in mind just plain voile curtains without the drape on the ceiling, but just wanted to show different effects. Lights can be loosely pinned to the back of the curtain tape so they open and close with the curtain, blackout blind means your window wouldn’t look like a Xmas display all year round:) Anyway, you’re getting there! And it’s you’re home so get things which you love. All the best. x
