to runner or not to runner?

Hi I can't decide whether to runner or to close fit the grey loop carpet we are having on the stairs. Stairs are slightly narrower than average so would have a small amount of painted at the sides.

Comments (36)I'm not that keen on tablecloths or runners and much prefer tables bare. I always use a tablecloth when we have people over for dinner though. I do have a habit of ruining them though (3 in as many months with red wine stains and candle wax) but I was given a Ralph Lauren one for xmas and was told it was indestructible. It did receive the obligatory red wine stain and washed out so fingers crossed. We also took the decision not to stress over the wooden kitchen table top and let it "age/wear" although our son is past the age of painting if not smearing food!...See Morewhich carpet is better
Comments (38)Thanks all , I’m now keen to find an inexpensive hardwearing runner that compliments and will hide dirt from muddy paws! I don’t want anything contemporary or modern, I prefer classic English country / ethnic. Any ideas?, like I say it has to hide dirt, or should I ask the carpet people to do a runner in the chosen carpet but that might still show a lot of dirt... thanks...See MoreCrittall House of the Year Award runner up

8 years agoWe had the same dilemma, I love stair runners but our Edwardian staircase is much narrower than our previous Victorian staircase which had a runner. I think your photo demonstrates the issue as the stripe up the centre looks narrow. We decided to go for full width carpet (coincidently grey loop as well). I love the look, it is luxurious and clean looking. Photos attached. Good luck with your decision.

8 years agoHi your hallway and stairs are exactly the same as mine. We sanded down and varnished the existing treads and painted the risers white. Just recently we cut out the board on the stairs and installed glass. I love it.
