How easy is it to replace a tiled floor on underfloor heating?

We moved in an gained a great basement kitchen diner. However, cream Matt floor tiles and a black Labrador are not a good combination. How easy is it to replace the floor and what would be a good tried and tested alternative? Any advice, photos would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know about what the best flooring would be as I don't have a dog. But, how easy it is to change it will depend on how it was laid. If the flooring was laid after the kitchen was installed then it should be fairly easy. If the kitchen was installed on top of the tiles, then I would say it's going to be near impossible, without removing the kitchen first - my parents are in this position.

Just wondering....Maybe the cream colour was picked to help with giving light in your basement room? Don't labradors love food, so maybe put the food dish somewhere where he/she has to walk across a very dirt absorbent rug??

Hello@jones1978, We had the UFH installed 4 years ago and when researching it, I didn't even consider rugs and trapped heat; my thinking was that is 'they' say you can use carpet, a rug wouldn't make a difference. Well, as I discovered, it depends. If your rug is one of those heavy, high density knots wool rugs, the chances are that it will keep the heat trapped. However, a rather light, either cotton, sisal, viscose or thin wool rug doesn't seem to affect the overall temperature. I think the overall room temperature also depends on your insulation. The office room in the photos above is basically an internal room, it has no exterior walls or windows, so we actually rarely put the heating on in there even in December - and hubby works from home most of the week. Our living room, on the other hand, is the only room in the house with single glazing (conservation area rules) and a heavy rug; it's the coldest room in the house and looses heat pretty quick if we don't close the shutters. Luckily for us, the fireplace is functional and we light a fire almost every evening in the winter. I've been thinking about buying a thinner rug, but it really doesn't bother us that much. Make of this what you will, but personally, I still love UFH and I'd rather live with no rugs than go back to radiators... Good luck with your project! @mckevis - congrats on finishing! I have exactly the same problem so I am interested to see what responses you get! We have been in the house for 3 months now with heating on fairly high and bathrooms particularly warm as they are linked to the central controls and have had no issues yet (we only have ceramic tile in bathrooms). I am considering regrouting but it is hard to be motivated when we have had no issues yet. I take some responsibility because I picked the grout but this was just for the colour, I expected that the building firm would keep us right with technical requirements so I can totally understand your frustration!

Depends whether you want efficient or always warm underfoot? Efficiency of UFH affected by insulation. How airtight is the house? Do you have mechanical ventilation etc?

Regardless of what finish you choose, the thing with wet UFH is that it relies on heat building up in and being stored in the floor slab. You don’t really ever turn it off in the winter, you just set the room thermostats for different temperatures at different times of the day. In the summer you just set the thermostat to frost setting so it never kicks in. We have tiles and I like having a cool floor in the summer heat, as do my dogs. In autumn and spring other finishes may feel more cosy as sometimes the tiled floor doesn’t feel obviously warm when the air is up to temp, tho it’s not properly cold either.

From the photo it looks like the kitchen is over the tiles. Nice kitchen. Not sure I would change then out as this won't be an easy redo in my opinion. Maybe a Roomba for pets (I love mine) and a couple of Swiffer wet jets at the ready?

I agree with MrsKain, invest in a Roomba and save yourself a ton of work and expense, wonderful kitchen !!!

I too agree , a Roomba on timer by far the most cost effective solution.
