Expose brick wall back to original

Does anybody have any advice as to how I should start with this wall, I'd like to take it to the red bricks? How do I strip the grey? I assume it is paint. Would I have to re point??

Hello mvee87, Wow what an arch... I really like it the way it is.... Think the grey is fantastic with the odd red brick... It perhaps could do with repointing but... Don't take the character out of it.. So I'd say leave it as much as possible.. : ))

Hi. To my non-expert eye they look like silver grey bricks. If not, someone did a fantastic paint effect! I also love it exactly as it is without repointing. If you really want it red, why not test one brick with masonry paint stripper in an inconspicuous area? If it turns out to be painted and you want it "smarter" looking then make sure you specify the colour of the grout to tie it in with the original as I made the mistake of not doing so when I had to have mine rebuilt with reclaimed bricks :(

I agree with Rennew Traditional Building Materials - it's not a question of what's 'trending' or 'passé', but of really paying attention to the existing building and marrying that with the sensibility of the future inhabitant. Some spaces suit the industrial treatment, some don't, and no-one should be forced to be fashionable. I can't help thinking of the old Bauhaus principle of 'truth to materials' though. If you find yourself faking an 'authentically exposed' surface, then something isn't quite clicking in your analysis of what's in front of your nose. Not that I wasn't once taken in by an entirely ersatz 'industrial' café in Paris once, which was not, as I'd supposed, a converted butchers! The convincingly-aged metro tiles were to die for...

Thank-you One Plan, yes, I agree, plain glass might be easiest, presumably toughened for behind a gas hob?, but I do love colour and the handmade slightly rustic feel feel, so wondering if anything more decorative might work?, although I can see the point for keeping the bricks on show behind glass. Planning terracotta floor tiles, beech, red, cream and possibly copper accents, but at the moment the space is still being built!

Hi I had the same dilemma with the dining part of my kitchen. I love the brick wall effect so decided to try a wallpaper as it's only a small wall. I'm really pleased with the results. It cost me just £9 for one roll from B & Q. You can only tell it's wallpaper by getting up close and touching it - before and after photos attached.

From what i'm reading, I think you have only two choices on actual brick walls. The one with the cooker is an outside wall isn't it?? .....and then the one with the clock. Totally depends on how much work you want to make for yourself. If you just want to 'dip a toe', then go for the one with the clock. If you want to go all out then do the one with the cooker and hob. However..........and we have done a few of these now........that is Victorian houses...........Lyme plaster is a pain to work with!. Once you touch one bit 10 minutes later you've got a patch 3'x3', then you get bits that feel like they're welded on! Also, we have found on many of the houses that we have done full renovations on, the Victorians were fond of an 'anything goes' brick size approach! So be prepared to unearth allsorts and more importantly, be prepared to have to re-point most , if not all of the brickwork with Lyme mortar and then seal it! It isn't for the feint hearted. Here's an old Chimney breast that we did a few years ago in an Attic Bedroom. ( Before and After ) and finally ones on a Chimney breast from a different house. That's me in the photo !!! Have fun
