Defining spaces

Is it best to define spaces even in a small open concept room? I like how you have dining and living in a small open space, defining both spaces but keeping an open flow. I have a small open space for living/dining and am trying to figure out how to have both without making the room feel divided and disjointed. Any advice? Thx :)

Hi leinaalateruya, you can definitely have different zones in an open plan small space. Make sure you don't block pathways, and think about the circulation of a space. Also try to keep the style/colours cohesive - don't match but complement. Rugs are are great way to define a zone. A chandelier above a dining table will also do this. Another idea is hanging artwork above each zone which connects it that wall. Pick compact pieces which allow you to fit more into the space without it feeling cluttered. Just remember that less is more so don't over furnish a small space. Good luck!

It looks like a fairly large, light space so I would definitely go for the darker, bolder choice. I also agree with the majority that keeping the arch, but enlarging and squaring it off, might be better and leave you with more flexible spaces (it will also save you money!) If you get rid of the fireplace (which is pretty unispiring) I would make sure you still have some kind of feature there to add impact - console tables with mirrors over them work quite well. The beauty of the darker grey is that you can accessorise with pretty much any colour and it will look cool.

Hello M, Yes I rather feel the plan would lend itself to an open plan arrangement.. Perhaps though you could create the idea of some separateness by introducing panels and or semi open semi- structural elements that give you some defined separation whilst still retaining the open feel. Could be movable panels or even screens or book cases or other fabulous storage that really can look equally good with nothing on them. These kinds of ideas you may be able to incorporate into your design. I wonder if the loo and pantry/utility could perhaps be contained as loo, cloakroom or have a wet room style shower area with utility and pantry cupboard or pull out larders incorporated into the kitchen area. Or incorporate washing/drying in the kitchen area.. Samsung do a fantastic washer dryer or indeed separates that are lovely to look at they don't need to be hidden away.. They're called Eco bubble. Moving dining table further over could mean you could have a bigger island with the range or oven/hob and more storage for pans either side.. Thus sink, ff, dw and food cupboards could be within the space as set out.. Full height pull out larder might give you the space to store whilst taking up little space and moving the dining table means you can move the island further over.. With regards to the play area.. do you need a defined space for this... You can have nifty storage for toys, books etc which double up as furniture but offer somewhere to contain things when they're not "flavour of the moment" By opening the space the living room and the casual seating area can create better flow for you as you can define spaces within open plan with screens and other interest configurations of furniture.. What then happens is that you feel the flow of the house. Some ideas that I think would make a nice use of space.. If you have height too, consider the idea of split level divisions.. they don't need to be a gr8 degree of difference, even a small step in height differentiation can make a difference.. Again something that you may be able to incorporate.. With this idea too, you can create hidden storage for such things as toys etc.. :))

Depending on the property (and the budget), both options have their merits. A big loft space can be more easily converted to a room but often the structure or space isn't sufficient and an dormer or extension is needed. This can offer a whole new floor to the building and with some imagination you can transform the property completely. www.pwjarchitects.com

We have this In frame display in our Harrogate showroom. We feel that by painting the wall a dark contrasting colour it helps frame the cabinets.
