What should I use to support ceiling if I knock through the wall?

I would like to knock through the remaining kitchen wall in order to improve the flow of the kitchen diner. I wonder if I could get away with some support other than using an RSJ. Perhaps doing and opening like a large window shape in the wall leaving some wall remaining but allowing you to see through to the kitchen or some other support to hold up the ceiling ? Builders seem reluctant to take on this small job . One asked us to sort out the RSJ ourselves.

I would take advice from a structural engineer - that is a very thick wall!

I agree that looks like a think wall- I think you need a different builder to just do it.

PS- in my opinion don't spend the money to make a small opening- take the whole lot out.

You need to have someone look at it to see what, if anything, is in the wall (pipes, drains, etc.) and whether or not it is load bearing. Depending on the home and how the rooms are used, an open space is generally preferred right now.

There is unlikely to be any reason why you cannot do this. You will need to consult a structural engineer who will do the calculations for the size of RSJ required. You will then need to submit your plans as your 'building regulations drawings' to the local Building Control as this is a notifiable alteration. Your builder or designer can do this for you. The Building Inspector will need to first approve the plans and calculations and then make a site inspection after the opening has been made and the steel is in place, but before you plaster over it. First of all removing all the stuff that doesn't belong in a living room will help. The living room feels like a closed off space because it looks so different compared to the dining room and kitchen. Everything is white and has a nice tiled floor. I would suggest continuing with this in the living room or you could put the wallpaper from the dining room in the living room as well. Having a floorplan would help when designing the space, but I'll try my best without a floorplan. Where the fireplace goes I would suggest letting someone make a custom cupboard. You can hang the tv on the space above that cupboard and make that the tv station. I would remove the sofa from the wall and move it closer to the "fireplace". Add a nice carpet and a coffeetable. Add a floor lamp and pick a different light fixture. If you want you can also create a seperate reading nook. I hope this helped.

Definitely not a job to do without either a structural engineer or a very reliable builder - if you're in the UK you'll need one who can "sign it off" with building regs anyway (different from planning permission) as any new owner can ask to see this and solicitors are quite often insistent. This is not a job to sort out yourself, as has huge implications, not just downstairs, but upper floors too - take no chances. But honestly, any good builder worth his weight should be able to do the work, although many will consider it too small to bother with - get another recommended builder!
