Steep sloped garden area need help

We have recently purchased a house which we will be refurbishing which also includes an area of land which runs perpendicular to the house in addition to the main garden area, see photo. This has just been left for a number of years and gradually clearing it. It is a perfect allotment/veggie patch etc and will be moving greenhouse and shed to this area. Looking for ideas for retaining walls to cope with steepness of it or any other options considered. The main garden area will be renovated and new grassed tiers added with feature planting, the bottom patch of land cannot be seen from the house and we like the idea of an infinity garden look before reaching this part of the garden. All ideas greatly appreciated.

Terrassing it all would definitely make it more useable. Gabions might be a cheap and reasonably quick option for retaining walls

Morning, Our sister company JML Contracts specialises in Gabion baskets and retaining walls. Are you in Scotland? I have spoken to the office manager who said if you PM me, I can let yo know a local company to you, if not..

To build retaining walls out of gabion baskets, they do need to be designed by a structural engineer, but they would do all of that for you. It does help, if you have photos, measurements and also a wee sketch of what you ideally would like it to look like when it is finished. Here are a few pictures to give you an idea of what you can do....

Hello there, Have you considered creating terraces? I did a design for a sloping back garden some time ago... please feel free to take a look at my website here. That project was inspired by the surrounding hills. In your case, depending on the style of your house and the location, perhaps a series of terraces might work well. These terraces could be either flat or slightly tilted so to reduce the height of the step between them... If you like curves, the terraces could be a series of circles for example... hope this helps!

Love the pics Rachel...maybe I need to think of decking and stones/plants...like that idea... You can't see from the photo of garden but we have slide and swing and also shed beyond the bushes so our granddaughter can keep toys in. We get the evening sun at the rear of the garden so also a BBQ area and sun loungers are here.. I'm thinking of creating a further dining area over there eventually! Back to the area next to the house which is next to the patio and dining area I would like it to be a chilled area with planters and seating as per the pics.. it's just choosing the right ground cover (decking or stone and pavers are now becoming my favourites)

Yes I want to avoid the wall looking oppressive so your advice about not making the first wall too high is really helpful. 👍🏼 The plan is to put the first retaining wall about 4 - 5 metres from the patio doors. It is going to be a balancing act- the more terraces, the less steep the slopes, but the less usable space on the terraces itself because they will have to be narrow. The fewer the terraces, the steeper the slopes but more usable flat spaces...😁. I think I also read somewhere else on this forum that it is better to have a max of 3 terraces otherwise the garden may look a bit too chopped up... Thanks for your advice!

Thank you for your suggestions. I will try to post some photos shortly... Sonia, your ideas look great but our definitely beyond my skills (and budget!) our garden is on a much steeper incline too. The previous owner has put some of the 'plank steps' in to get from the terrace to the grassed area but they look very old and bit rotten now.. Ideally it would be nice to be able to traverse the garden rather than just walk down in a straight line, hard to envisage without photos so I will endeavour to post some....

You could get a mini digger in and sculpture the the land in a curvilinear style to help with the infinity look, people forget you can curve on the vertical axis as well as the horizontal.

Dry stack concrete block retaining walls might be an option - especially if you go for a terraced design

Cost effective solution would be railway sleepers secured with re-bar.
