Can you paint kitchen worktops?

Hi, we have not long moved into a house that needs some upgrading! The kitchen Units are good ( Just need a change of handles!) but the worktops are a vile orange/browny greenly pattern! The configuration is ok, so can I paint the existing work tops? If so, what products does everyone recommend? Thank you!

Rustoleum do a worktop paint in USA I believe ( from reading Houzz USA dilemma's ) don't know how good it is or if you can get it over here (in UK ) though ?!?! Might be worth investing in new tops instead ?!?

Hello Angela,

Ah, so they are not wood? I know Rustoleum do an all surface paint, not sure how many colours they have.. Have never tried this so not sure how good it would be... There are others too even UPVC paints in various colours.. Never had those windows so never tried the product.. A few alternatives to the Rustoleum.. You'd probably have to paint and give a hardened diamond clear top coat varnish too, to seal the colour and prevent scratches......

I do agree that for long term especially when you use the worktop so much, that new worktops could be a better idea... Something like a cupboard door would be better with these paints as they are limited in contact...

If you want to paint plastic coating veneer to another colour. I would definitely try a tester somewhere not overly visible to see if it takes.. ... : ))

Hi, in my opinion, you need for the top a darker, neutral tone to add some contrast with the big amount of white of the doors. You can even go for bit of texture on this top, as it is a good opportunity to warm up the kitchen, very cold at present. There is a wide variety of worktops available at Egger, 38 mm thickness.From them I would suggest Red Brown Leon Slate or Brown Malawi ( with wood grain texture), for a nice, warm but darker top.Valetta Sand or Isodora Beige, might be a second option, too, if you don't like contrasts. Another interesting option would be a texture similar to Corten Steel or Cooper Or, if you feel adventurous and want an element of surprise, you can always try a top on real reclaimed or distressed wood. It will be definitely more difficult to be managed, but it will bring the whole kitchen to life. Good Luck , Georgia Cristea Interiors

Whilst there can be occasions when it may be more hassle/work to re-fit existing kitchen units into a completely new layout, this doesn't look to be the case with what you want to achieve. Your kitchen looks in good condition and you want to have a single run of units on the wall opposite your new sliding doors. As a carpenter & joiner I'm struggling to see any difficulty with such on the basis of the info you've provided. At worst you may need a new worktop or section of such and/or end panels. If you've got a full wall of units the opposite side you could potentially use some of those to form your new island (depending on what sort of configuration you have in mind), with the addition of new doors, heavier end panels & stone worktop to contrast. There shouldn't be any problem with re-using your range either (just check sizes), and £100 or so spent getting an oven cleaner in should have it looking great with your new layout, until you decide to replace it.

Love your kitchen, you’ve done a great job, not only does the kitchen look good, it’s totally practical, drawers are the way forward, even if they are more expensive than cupboards. I’ve just redone a kitchen in a house we rent out, the old one was finally falling apart. I was going to go to Howdens and use the joiner etc we knew, but in the end we used a small local company, which cost us £300 more, but the quality of their interior cabinets and doors was so outstanding, plus they could do everything, including tiling, we went with them. We didn’t change the floor, but did everything necessary, I’m hoping it lasts well and our tenants look after it!
