Two septic tank lids protruding and garden slopes down at back. Approx 20m wide x 10m long Thanks.

Willow screens around access to septic tanks. Have you got kids? Want low maintenance? What is your budget?

Thanks so much folks! There are some really awesome ideas in here that we hadnt reconsidered ! We aren't keen on a Murphy bed because of the size of them which usually makes existing rooms smaller so we'd keep a sofa bed instead if we couldn't make a genuine second bedroom area but having seen some of the designs for opening it up and creating a second bed at the back I think I may revisit the budged and see if it can stretch more because having a second room would be great and add a ton of value so may well be worth the added expense. Thanks again what a creative bunch - keep ideas coming if you think of any more! Will update if/when we decide on a layout too

Sketch 4. Thought I’d design something more natural so made the lawn a nice large oval shape which should allow for lots more planting. Crescent shaped path round the edge so you don’t get mucky feet waking to the shed/summerhouse. Added a pond which should look fab near the house, imagine the sound of a bubbling water whilst you’re sitting on the patio. Very relaxing 😎, and great for nature as well. Couldn’t find much inspo with an oval lawn so I’ve added a random pic. Hope this gives you some inspiration and remember that it’s your garden so you can plan it to how you want it. I think it helps to identify what you’d like to use it for such as kids play area, do want grow veg, lots of flowers, entertaining friends (not now of course), just chilling out, that kind of thing. Also take note of where the sun rises and sets throughout the year as this can affect where you want to place seating areas and what you can plant where. P.s. Silver birch is lovely but they do grow big, I have one and the trunk has propped itself up on a concrete wall, currently approx 20 ft high. I’d still go for it tho but plant at least 4ft away from any fences.

Emily the way you speak of your garden and plants fills me with joy! I planted a Birch in a very large pot last year and did lots of research. Would a forest tree work in a pot? I did lots of research from The Royal Horticultural Society and they said yes! There is a Birch called Betula Jackmanii and it has an amazing white trunk, so one to think about. Jasmine likes sun and shelter so the one near the house is in a perfect place. Other plants I can suggest are Cistus (pink or white flowers). It only grows to about 4ft and is evergreen. I visited an open garden yesterday which had a gorgeous courtyard garden where they served tea and cake. It had a large pergola too with a silver birch growing through the deck and up through the pergola! Here a picture of it. The third pic is my Weigela which is a stunner, and the last pic is a Cistus.

Hi there Liz, My best advice with a small garden is to think very carefully before you do anything as there is literally nowhere to hide anything! You have to think about evsrything that you want out of your garden and what is the best way to lay them out. Painting the fence or walls in a dark colours is good as it creates the illusion that the boundaries are further away than they really are (and hence that the garden is bigger). But also, since in a small garden space is at a premium, it is also a good idea to use the walls for planting as well (climbers, hanging pots and baskets etc). I would also introduce some planting beds (maybe some raised beds that could double up as seating -again space is at a premium so you have to think carefully and include thinkgs that thick more than one box at once). When choosing the planting, always match it with the unique conditions of your garden so that they thrive. And also in this case I would go for big bold foliage because they will make your garden look bigger. I offer online garden design and would be very happy to help you with this.I have designed a few small gardens and have experience with this sort of thing. Having a design for a small garden is very good as it gives you a final plan to achieve and you can do the build bit by bit as budget allows, but without loosing the focus on the final design (and having the risk of it looking disjointed). Also I charge by the garden area, so smaller gardens are usually cheaper designs. Minimal budget = ornamental grasses in front of the septic tank lids. Low cost, and low maintenance, some gravel and the odd grasses and rocks. Decking is an investment but can also extend your socializing space

Read up all about how to grow plants from cuttings. Then tell your family , friends and neighbours that you need cuttings and old pots. Buy seed raising mix and locate a stick. Also collect old margarine , yogurt etc containers. Cut off soft drink bottles make great covers. Join a local garden club and say you're a beginner. Gardeners love sharing advice and cuttings. For a cheap source of readymade plants try fetes, garage sales etc. if going to markets, go to the stalls farthest away from the gates. Enjoy!
