What are the edging stones for the borders?

They look like granite setts but are Cotswold coloured ... I love this garden.

I never even knew about these! What a great discovery as I;m in the Cotswolds and they will go very well with our stone here.

Firstly Thanks everyone for your comments Progress report. I have some things that could be used (after seeing the price of plants I thought at least I should try) ...they just don't go together?? I have a large 1m sq lavender in the bottom corner that I rescued before we dug the garden up. (not shown on pic and wasn't sure if its staying although its stunning in flower but doesn't have to stay) At the allotment I already have a lavender hedges that's have been growing for a couple of years round beds that could be moved? Hosta's love them I have 2 huge ones in pots at the minute but thought they hated the sun? I also have 2 bushy short bamboos and 4 big tall bamboos all in matching very plain, bronze colour, square fibreglass pots (4 big, 2 smaller) that are at the front of the house that could go round the back just not sure what plants would compliment them. Don't want to end up with something that resembles a meditation garden or panda rescue centre. Painting the fence is a great idea a new one would be even better when funds allow Worried about boxes a little as my pruning seems to get a little wild and I fear I would be left with off shaped balls but ordered my giant alliums already as I can either use them, grow in pots or brighten up the allotment beds Called at the garden centre on the way from work (quick rush round as it was closing) and saw Erica arborea 'Albert's Gold' lime green tall heather plant that had a really nice colour?

Box can be quite slow growing, so bear that in mind when planting, it may take a while for a space to fill in. It tends to be quite dense, you can usually trim it into shapes or precise levels for hedging, plus in the odd occasion when you get bare bits, it's simple enough to cut out the dead stuff and plant a new little plant to fill in the gap. They can look a bit sickly sometimes through lack of nutrients, with leaves tinged yellow, but they soon perk up with a good Buxus feed. They can get something called Box Blight, which will kill the leaves and stems and usually the best way to deal with that is to just dig up the plant. Finally, they do have an unusual smell (which I think smells a bit like tom cats), so sometimes this can be off putting if close to the house in any great quantity.

I think a small-medium tree would create a bit of privacy and some height to the border then you can plant underneath it. Trees that are easy are the Rowan (Sorbus), Hawthorn, Cornus kousa and Cornus florida and Crabapple. All have lovely blossom In the spring or summer. Shrubs that prefer some, or full, shade are things like Japanese Acers, Viburnum tinus (evergreen), Skimmia, Camellias and Rhododendrons (must have acid soil), Choisya ternata Sundance (evergreen). You can underplant with ferns, Bergenia, Dicentra specabilis, Anemones. Bulbs such as snowdrops, bluebells and lily of the valley like shady woodland type conditions. if you want a longer list, search on the RHS website for shade loving plants, the list is huge! THE TALL PURPLE TREE IS A JAPANESE ACER AS IS THE LITTLE PURPLE SHRUB AT THE FRONT, UNDERPLANTED WITH FERNS AND BRUNERRA HYDRANGEAS PREFER SHADE BUT THEY NEED LOTS OF WATER FERNS AND BRUNNERA JACK FROST

I would suggest you plant some small shrubs under the window. That is remove all or some of the the gravel, dig in some compost into the soil and then get planting. It depends whether the spot is sunny or shady. Shrubs that like sun are Roses, Cistus, Spiraea, dwarf Lilac, Skimmia and Lavender. Ones that prefer shade or semi shade are Ferns, Euonymous fortunei, small Conifers and Hydrangeas. There are lots more so search the RHS website for small shrubs. I think a jumble of smaller shrub roses would look stunning (first pic).
