We have a neighbour's oil tank and another neighbour's boiler room door in our courtyard, which obviously need to be accessed, but are unsightly, so we have long planters with trellises attached, which we put wheels on (two of which you can lock to stop it from rolling around). We have grown evergreen honeysuckle on the trellis, which is relatively fast growing but has the most gorgeous scent in the summer. A bit like this

Venting hob - so confused which to go for!

Hi Pam, we went for the Berbel Downline Performance Permalyt on the extremely strong recommendation of our kitchen company owner who is a friend of a friend and been in the kitchen business for decades. They offer a highly bespoke and friendly kitchen design and advisory service. They were fantastic to deal with and use the same Berbel in their own homes and demo'd it for us in their workshop. We were concerned about whether to externally vent or not and they talked us out of doing so as simply not necessary. That's a big call for an expensive extension and kitchen but we went with their advice. The Permalyt vent mechanism does take up room directly under the hob, so make sure your design accommodates for it, if you go for it. Their kitchen fitter told us that you can cook a fish on the hob and then smell the recirculated air coming out of the bottom vent and you cannot smell anything. If that really is the case then it is truly remarkable. We will find out in a few months time. They told us about how it filters out oil and cleans using the Permalyt technology; how easy it is to clean and maintain etc. Can't help you with Bora other than to say they never got a look-in as a result of the steer we were given. The Berbel Permalyt does need to be fitted by an expert though, apparently. Also, order early is what we were told and don't forget that European factories shut down in August! Air vents were used to let fresh air into the house to prevent damp problems. Blocking them up can cause condensation in a room, however opening a window slightly does the exact same thing. If the windows have been replaced since the house was built (my guess is 1950's onward?) the new windows should come with vents built in. My parents house had similar vents. We had all of them removed when the double glazing was put in. The ouse became much warmer and they've not had any problems.
