Bifold doors on kitchen, diner or both?

My kitchen and dining room both overlook the garden. I am planning to knock out the wall between the rooms but cannot decide which room to put bifold or sliding doors. Should it be in the kitchen, dining room or both? Our living room also overlooks the garden and has sliding glass doors. I am worried all glass will be too much.

Morning! For me it depends on the kitchen layout. If you can afford the space then I would definitely put bifolds on both! You can't have enough glass in my opinion. It completely transformed a space and turns it into something even more beautiful! Just think carefully about your kitchen layout before you make the decision. Hope that helps

I think it all depends on what you use the areas for ,,,,

do you entertain a lot spec in the summer do you have a lot of kids in the summer

Hi Heather! Thanks for your comment, I suppose it's just down to personal perspective and budgets. We won't be able to put aside that amount just for the doors so will likely need to compromise on quality etc!

In a previous house we had 3x1m aluminium bi fold doors. All doors stacked outside to the right. I loved them but I think anything larger than 1m panels would have been too heavy and unwieldy. One of the panels was our back door and clipped onto the second door to secure it. But a glass panel of 1.2m is a big door to be opening on a windy day. I would go for the 4x 1m option. On a warm sunny day it will be lovely to have that large opening. Ours were SE facing and some days they would be open from 7 am to bedtime. We only had one issue with them. Sometimes in hot weather they would swell and be difficult to close until they cooled down. However I have never heard of this happening before.

I’m getting an ultraline sliding door fitted in our new extension in a few weeks. 2.4 high x 4.4 wide. The frames are 20mm. It’s about £10k and I can’t remember off the top of my head whether that includes VAT (probably not unfortunately). But our number one goal with our extension is to connect our living space to our garden, so it feels right to prioritise budget for it. You don’t need a local company necessarily as national companies will have local agents who have product in their showrooms. This has been tricky over the last few months but we also looked at local friends’ houses last summer, where they had installed various different brands of sliders and bifolds, and were able to get a good feel for them from their gardens! sometimes its good to take a breath and really think about how you live - rather than all focus being on the plans, which can seem immovable. For example, I have a largely open plan ground floor but on the advice of my sister whose kids were older at the time, I kept a small snug living room that is separate and as my kids have grown up through teenage years that has been a saving grace - we can all go to separate places,! I dont have to listen to video games whilst cooking etc :) Does one person often watch tv and the other like to read? Where do hobbies take place? Would it be a simple solution to just turn that dining table round to make more space for those doors? If you like to entertain would you like to hide the mess inthe kitchen to be cleared up later? I for example insisted that I could close my kitchen off from the front room and hall (and stairwell) because one of my pet hates is cooking smells lingering everywhere! Also consider if the doors could be retro fitted - and l ive in the space for 9 months first to see if you really need/want them?
