Sloped roof to flat roof

We are thinking of renovating Our bathroom which has a low sloped roof & would like to change it into flat roof to give a sense of space! Do we need planning permission for it or something of this sort? We live in London.
I attached a photo of another bathroom to show what is a sloped roof

Possibly but it may be permitted development if it is not the slope facing the highway. Look on the planning portal for more info, Google it and u should find it

So many aspects to consider which might affect whether you need planning permission, so always worth checking with a planning officer first. While you may well need PP, I doubt this would be too contentious (unless you are in a conservation area, for example) and could well be under permitted development as you are unlikely to be increasing the volume by much, but it also will depend on whether any of your "permitted development allowance" may have already been used on other extensions.

Strongly advise you to get some advice and perhaps get an architect or building surveyor to do some initial outline plans to doscuss with the planning officer. Also, look at other similar houses in your street/area and see if they've done something similar - if they have, chances are you will be allowed also!

Hi. Sarah's comments are spot-on, and we would also advise consulting with an architectural designer to look at the living implications of each design. We have designed many rear extensions (both pitched and flat roofed) and have attached photos of two examples; Victorian House flat-roofed kitchen extension with sliding doors, and a 1970s pitched-roof rear extension with roof light and bi-folds. Think carefully about how you would like to utilize the space, whether you want to be able to open up the whole space to the garden, or have the option of opening some or all of the doors. Again, speaking with your designer and some sliding/bi-fold door companies will help. Our advice is, take your time, get good advice and whatever you decide, do the best job you can afford, you will not regret it. Hope you find this helpful.

Hi there! I would strongly suggest that you first consider the local regulations. That way you will increase the likelihood of the plan being approved by your council's planning officer (assuming you require permits). Therefore, I would take a look at other similar extensions in your street, see how the shape of the roof would fit in with the existing roof and finally, check if the shape of the roof would make an impact on the neighbouring houses in terms of sunlight. Hi Nicola - we used both types and if correctly applied, and the flashings are done properly,. you'll be fine with both. Having said that, its easier to apply a felt roof wrongly than it is to apply a rubber roof. Ask your builder for a cost comparison and check the guarantees for both - I should have stressed that more - do get the roof installed by someone who can give you a guarantee, please! ;-)

We went through this same decision process with our 6x4m rear extension recently. Eventually we choose a gable with glazed end for several reason. Firstly several friends and comments online made me wonder about the heat and light issues with lanterns. It will also be our main living area when entertaining so noise on a large glass lantern was also a consideration. However worth noting we spoke to several builders and all came back with slightly higher estimates for the gable than the flat roof extension so that might also be a something worth considering (although that did include the glasses end, bifold and skylights). I'm currently researching skylights (that's how I found your post) and were looking at circa £6k for velux and possibly more if we go for frameless bespoke ones. Good luck with your planning.
