Light and Dark combination wood flooring

Hello All,

I have an open plan kitchen living room and the current flooring is light/blonde vinyl wood in the kitchen and a cream carpet in the living room. I was thinking of getting rid of the carpet and replacing it with a dark wood effect vinyl flooring,

Any suggestions/comments?

If you are looking for a click system, I would opt for a dark wood effect by Amtico or Moduleo. Otherwise Karndean is very popular. Any of these three luxury vinyls would be ideal for those rooms. You need to consider how dark you want to go - from experience a very dark floor does show up every little crumb. This is American Black Walnut by Amtico which is really popular.

Thank you for the comment. I am planning to install karndean but still not sure of the colour. I really like the Australian Walnut from karndean. The 4th sample from the top in the picture.

Hi. If the room is bright then it could handle walnut although obviously it will darken it. Dark floors with pale-mid tone walls can actually make a room feel bigger. However, if upkeep is an issue I would avoid walnut. I have it and it needs constant cleaning. What about a mid oak? It hides dirt well (not suggesting you won't clean it regularly but it doesn't need a daily clean like walnut!) . As you're using it in the kitchen are you looking at engineered wood? Or maybe karndean ( Which I've just been to look at with my mum!), it's ideal for kitchens and more hardwearing than wood. It's not cheap but probably the same price as an average wood.

Hi Emily. In terms of the floor it depends on a couple of things. Dark floors are hard to keep looking clean so would consider upkeep. If the room isn't large a dark floor may also make it look smaller if you have light walls/skirting boards (the less contrast there is the bigger the room will feel). If the room doesn't get much light then a dark floor could make it feel dark although if it has a glossy/shiny finish it will bounce the light. For the kitchen units try and work with the light. What way does the room face and how much light does it get? Light worktops are much more on trend. Again if the room is dark I'd avoid a dark Matt finish worktop although something glossy will reflect the light. Depending on the room you could find lighter units may make it feel more spacious. I'm not sure if that helps but more details are probably needed!

I have a very dark laminate, almost black with matt white cabinets. I have a dog and have no issues with it at all, in fact it hides his paw prints (not that I don't mop my floor!) It doesn't suck any light out of my room, I love the warmth it brings. I did um and ah between this flooring and a very light white oiled parquet (quite the contrast) BUT as I couldn't afford real parquet and this flat didn't suit it I opted for this instead.

Hi, I am in the process of buying a 30s house which is has a beautiful dark wood floor throughout the downstairs and a fairly new kitchen which is light blue and will not be replaced. I am trying to work out a good colour scheme for the kitchen, breakfast room and lounge and need help! I've been reading about complementary, analogous, monochromatic etc but with so many options I am confused. I have attached a photo of the kitchen and breakfast room which is from a video so not the best quality. Any suggestions on a colour scheme or how to approach choosing one would be appreciated! I am guessing I should use the same colour scheme in the kitchen and breakfast room because they are connected but maybe a completely different colour scheme in the lounge?
