Need help with making bathroom more .. up-scale..

Hi all,

we are thinking about improving our bathroom, but not sure which way to with it..

our window feels way too big, we need spotlights on the ceiling (?), but.. feels like we are lacking an overall vision of what is it we can achieve here..

Could you please help with your great ideas?

I think your main problem is your half wall border tiles. The colour they are in is extremely outdated. You can very easily remedy this though! Purchasing some tile primer, tile paint and tape would update this. I would paint the half wall border tiles the same colour as the current tiles or white. This would brighten it up. Also, your folding shower screen is a little messy - perhaps opt for a fixed, rigid clear shower screen instead. I feel like it would help structure your bathroom a little more and give it a cleaner visual line.

Sounds like you are getting some good advice. I would recommend before you hang pictures you check the tone/hue of the blue you are going to introduce. If the grey in the bathroom is a warm grey, then you will be introducing a cool colour that may make the room look flat. All greys have a base colour for example yellow, purple, green etc. If you can define the base colour of your tiles you will be able to accessorize more appropriately. Using a range of face cloths in a multitude of colours is one easy way of checking which colour works well in your bathroom. John Lewis have a kaleidoscope of self coloured (and patterned) inexpensive towels, you can simply return the ones you don't want. Buying on line saves time and hassle and I think is free if you spend over £50. Keeping your palette to an odd number of colours ie 3/5/7 will help. You already have white and grey, so adding one or 3 more colours would be a good rule of thumb. Good luck and have fun!

I wouldn't change much regarding the layout/placement of white goods either. But it'd be possible to get some extra. For example, an L- or P-shaped shower bath would get a nicer shower space. You'd end up with the wider part by the window though so may then also consider opaque glazing or a screen there. A concealed cistern in the back wall would bring that forward by around 10cm. If you don't want to loose all that space, a boxed-in cistern and shelves above may give you a little storage back. On the washing machine: you triggered my inner geek :-) This may be possible. You need to research a few things for this: A) a slim depth washing machine (usually 425mm) B) availability of a height reduction kit for it (if these are avail gets height down from 850mm to 800mm) C) use an extra-flat bottle trap for the basin D) partly embed that into a thin washtable (to make the surface then a total of ~100mm above the machine) If all these go together it should just be possible to fit washtable, drains, basin trap and the machine underneath into a box about 910x600x500mm (HxWxD) which is kitchen unit height. The countertop sink would sit above that. Maybe a little bit of extra space could be gained still if you'd construct a basin from a flat shower tray with an integrated trap (a Wedi fundo plano is 60mm high) but I'm not sure how to put the washing machine drain on then. If I had to have a shower over a bath, I would have a low down hand held one that could preclude the need for a glass screen. The wall that is built out from the end of the bath, could this extend across the entire width of the wall so that you can lose the loo cistern and create a shelf that goes behind the sink too? It could be the same height as the window sill. I think the all over tiling looks a bit oppressive. On the window wall, you could tile up the to false wall height but not above, thereby breaking it up. I love tiles, there are so many beautiful ones, just get the tones, colours and grout right and they can transform a boring space.

Congrats on your new home! The cheapest option is to update the rail and add a new shower curtain- or a shower blind as previously suggested. All other options are costly. I know as I have just researched the same problem for a house I have just renovated! L shaped glass screens are not standard so are costly to purchase. I would suggest rather than spending the money on a costly alternative, spend the money on doing up the bathroom which will add value. The current bathroom has a basic suite and wall/ floor tiles. If you renovate the bathroom you will get your money back and probably a bit more depending on where the house is. Replace the suite with something new- basic white suite costs about £450 including taps and keep everything in the same place so cheaper to replumb. The basic wall tiles, if in good order, you could re-grout with a coloured grout. Grey is the obvious option but there are some great alternatives- red, blue or yellow for instance. Keep the shower curtain option and maybe move the shower fixing to the long wall and add a overhead shower head so the water goes down rather then outwards- if you know what I mean! You could lift the floor tiles and if laying on a flat surface, lay vinyl tiles which you can do yourself. B&Q have a lovely geometric design which I have used a couple of times and looks great- especially if you team with blue grout! Distract the eye of your potential viewers with great design and hopefully they will forget all about the shower- after all you bought it so others will too! Good luck! In the photo are the B&Q vinyl tiles I mentioned. On the walls are shower panels from Reco panels-not cheap but come in all sorts of designs and you can fit them yourself to the wall so avoiding the use of a tiler! Also quick so your bath won't be out of action for too long!

Tapping into the metallics trend is a fabulous way to add an element of glamour and would also turn the wonderful amount of light you have from the window into a feature by reflecting this around the room.
