What floor goes with a striped runner?!

Hi - in the midst of building work and have got my lovely striped grey runner on the stairs. But what floor should I put in the hall?! I had thought Victorian tiles originally but now I think it will just clash with the runner. I have grey carpets in the living room and F&B Ammonite on the walls - if I put grey 'wood effect' tiles down, will that all just look too grey and blah?

Or should I just put down a dark wood floor?

Totally lost and hoping someone will have an opinion that will sway me in one direction!

I really like the victorian style tiles and I don't think it clashes with the runner as the colours are all fairly neutral. My eyes are drawn to the tiles, the carpet is a very good match to the wall colour and the stripe is subtle so I think you need the drama of the tiles to give the wow factor.

The tiles look good also a dark very dark wood floor would look good.

Oh dear, I hope your company didn't lay them... The problems are legion, but the most striking mistake is in the layout. The tiles do not follow the line of the stairs, nor are they symmetrical. This will ALWAYS make the hall look lopsided. When you add in the colour scheme and lack of other period features, the owners have a problem. Are these encaustic tiles? The colour is far from traditional for a hallway and as others have said- more suited for a bathroom/utility room. If they are encaustic, why not move them to the garden and make a Mediterranean courtyard? The hall can then be inviting rather than blinding.

I also wouldn't add a runner, we had one in our last house and was forever slipping on it! I would just accessorise the shelf with a large display of stems or flowers, it also looks as if you have a plug socket (?) so a candlestick lamp with a patterned shade and maybe add a photo frame. Maybe a rattan umbrella stand for texture and 2/3 faux antlers or whatever you like up the stairs (think you need to click on the picture). I'd also add art at the top of the stairs and budget permitting I personally would swap the downlighter in front of the kitchen door for a pendant to create a focal point.

I had this myself recently - I ended up I did go with a wooden table - a vintage one with multiple shades so it would still contrast and not look too much/samey. I also put a jute rug beneath mine and once you dress the top with a runner and a plant/vase etc it looks great. Alternatively white always works and I love concrete but expensive - concrete resin - metal can also be a good option - I wouldn't go with glass - I feel it's dated.
