What are good lights for a dark hall?

I need to brighten up my hallway with lights at the back and on the half landing up the stairs. Not sure what kind of lights I can fit ...

Dear Swainsonprice,

Are you able to measure the ceiling height in your hallway and on your landing? I'd aim for 2m to the underside of any light to avoid any head-banging.

What sort of style do you like - contemporary, minimal, industrial, modern etc?

Hi we specialise in period detailing and panelling and staircases particularly in oak. I will attempt to give you some suggestions from our point of view. //Panelling// My first thought is to keep all of the panelling but to add a bit more style to it which could easily be achieved by adding a simple mouding around the panel as shown below, you can easily source mouldings from a local hardware shop. You could also add a Dado moulding and run it along the top rail of the panelling that goes up the staircase this would make the panelling look really nice. I would then prime and paint all of the panelling in a light colour to give the entrance a lighter feel. create a coat rack area in the porch with a small bench for taking of shoes and it would look like a really inviting entrance hall! //Staircase// Again I think the staircase would look really good painted or stripped and whitewashed like a scandinavian style pine floor, this would lighten the whole area. I really like it when staircases are painted except the handrail however It would need to be stained and polished to look like a contrasting dark hardwood. If you were thinking of installing a new traditional style staircase there would be a cheaper option which would be to clad the strings and posts and replace the hand rail and turnings for oak versions. However I personally would be painting it or whitewashing it and adding mouldings here and there if you need to. good luck!! Progress so far.... Opted for dark and so far I love it, it's very dramatic. We've still got the stairs and landing to go. Will be breaking up the colour with a photo wall, mirror, and looking to possibly frame some wallpaper as per the attached pic on the stairs wall to make it more contemporary. Although don't want to overdue it!

I’ve fairly recently moved to using Mylands Marble Matt emulsion. It’s a similar price to Farrow and Ball (maybe a tad more), but is bomb prove and scrubbable. 5 litres retails at £91, but I’ve discovered that Paint Depot online sell for £81 and also usually have a 10% off offer. When I bought from them, the paint was shipped direct from Mylands... Dulux Trade diamond Matt is their really tough version - I found it to be cheaper than the Mylands if going for white or magnolia. However not massively cheaper when you start mixing colours.

Would something like this work? They seem quite slim and as they have fabric shades would create a similar quailty of light to a lamp.
