Dark Room with Brown Sofa

A few years ago I purchased a maisonette 3 bedroom flat with a north facing living room.
What I failed to realise at the time was how dark the room was going to be, particularly during the day - fortunately I work during the week, so its only something that I really experience at weekends (particularly at this time of year).

My furniture consists of two dark brown sofas which I purchased, which I think makes the room even more darker. The issue I have is that I cant afford to replace my sofa furniture and was looking for any advice for incorporating dark furniture whilst having a bright space.

Im looking to start decorating in the next months or so (including replacing the oatmeal carpet we have in the room) - any tips would be much appreciated.

I have the same problem and to be honest i feel a bit depressed now ....i have two large dark sofa stealing all the light from the room.oak flooring oak SET of furniture ( my biggest mistake)

i will try to sell or exchange my sofa

my advice to you is to:

put cushions and throws on the sofa,change the curtains ,put white voiles and add some plants and more lighting ,like a floor lamp and a table lamp...this is my plan .hope this

In terms of the sofas you can add cushions and/or throw to lighten them up. For the walls you could use a yellow or red based neutral, something like farrow and ball savage ground is good for North facing rooms. Also use mirrors and metallic finishes to bounce light around. Window treatment also plays a big part so it would be helpful to see a pic of the window. Make sure you also have good artificial lightening, so a combination of ceiling or ŵall lights, plus table lamps and a floor lamp, lighting 3 corners of the room is effective.The other alternative is to embrace the dark and go for a lovely dark matt paint on the walls!!

Hi andykate1, With darker rooms it is best to stick to a light colour palette that will make the room feel more expansive and open. Agree with the suggestions of moving the console to this wall. Try it first before thinking about filling the area up, it may just be that you are unused to the space that has been opened up. If you don't need more seating, (your new couch looks very comfortable with ample seating) , leaving the space gives your room room to breathe!

Personally I think that with the neutral palate any colour will work- but I feel that you need to choose a contemporary design to work with your German kitchen. I would choose a simple but elegant sofa and chair, choose a pale neutral (but not grey to avoid the fifty shades thing) Then I would add colour through accessories and a patterned/ textured rug. Separately I think the worktop upstand detracts from the mirror splashback behind the hob and is unnecessary. Otherwise I think the kitchen looks great.

Generally they say if you've got dark walls to go with a lighter sofa. Whites are good but not practical so grey is always a safe option. Looking at the inspiration images some others are posting on this thread, grey really seems to pop. Maybe something with a traditional shape like these two from abreo.co.uk?

At the moment we have apple green curtains, cushions and table lamps in two opposite corners of the room

You could also try adding some oatmeal cushions. Is the curtain pole extended so that the curtains hang more or less away from the window so as not to block light? What flooring were you intending on getting? You could try a polished light wood or look at tiles which will bounce the light off the floor. What colour are the walls atm?
