We would very much recommend finding the right architect. Be fussy though. Although you have to pay out for their work initially, they can save you a fortune in the long run. Not only by assisting with matters such as planning, but also helping you dodge initial mistakes that can be made. Lastly, the right architect can give amazing advice on how to maximise the extension. Our sister company builds passive houses and I remember an architect that was adament that we should build in a larder and outdoor space that was undercover. We were not sure at the time, but these 2 parts of the build are the 2 parts the client constantly tells us she loves. The architect could see the lifestyle offered not just the build. Get the right one and you will not regret it!

If the kitchen company don't have a design service they must have had drawings from other professionals before- surely they would make a suggestion? The person in question could be various types of building professionals, interior designer, architectural technologist, architect, surveyor- anyone who is skilled in the design and production of technical drawings. If you want them to interpret your aspirations and needs- that honestly is down to the individual- technical skill and understanding of clients is not the same thing, so you should talk to a selection of people before choosing someone. For your peace of mind they must have insurance to cover their work- Professional Indemnity- thus they are covered and the rectification is covered should they make a mistake- the kitchen doesn't fit for example because they got a measurement wrong. If you need structural calculations you will need a structural engineer. If you have a trusted builder and they trust a particular architect- word of mouth recommendation is worth a lot. If you really can’t face applying for permissions then get someone else to do it for you. This is one of the services an architect can do for you. As far as where you extend I think a side return makes the former dining room less light and less useable but people accept this as they are protecting often modest gardens. If your garden is sizeable I say have an internal courtyard to help bring light into the centre of your house as you don’t have to be as economical with the garden.
