Cant decide on colour combinations!

8 years agoBizzarely enough, we have a similar colour scheme. Most of our house if filled with Antiques, including the sofas, which are Cigar brown. The skirting is wood like the floor, but the walls are all pale cream, that way I just use accessories such as cushions and curtains to change the colours in each room. We also have various bits of painted furniture dotted about to liven things up!

8 years agoOK so looks like I'm headed int he right direction as i was thinking white/cream walls but i definitely want the skirting to be white.
Here's what I'm dealing with in the dining room at the moment.
Its a dark day today but i'm worried that the the choice of floor will make it darker. The table is staying but the windows and dressing are going in favour of golden oak frames.....wish i was good with photoshop!

Comments (7)If you're going for vinyl, choose a stone or tile effect. One with grout lines look more realistic than a completely flat pattern. Stone will contrast nicely with the wooden flooring and work top. My new kitchen will be similar to yours, I had wanted black and white tiles(50's diner look) and my husband, terracotta. Comments (3)I like the one you've got, which I presume, is the darkest shade! it offers a nice contrast to the light floors and saves you the hassle of ensuring the light unit is tonally similar to the light floor, which is often difficult and looks odd if they don't match up right. Comments (24)Just remembered I promised to post an update once the fence was finished. Here it is. Excuse the state of the bushes etc, they need a bit of tidying up, and a few more shrubs / trees / plants addes, plus I made the mistake of letting my father in law loose with the loppers on the hedge in the corner - never again! Comments (16)Hi, Yes i think the Denimes and the inchyra does work well with the wood and a good point as I am having tiles, and I have a white work top. Within the room that’s not on the floor plan There will be a table which is wood and a sofa. I think I would need a wooden floor would be needed to bring Out the best in the Inchyra Blue. Its called Grey Oak but appears dark matt brown in colour, hope that helps.
Minnie101 - the window dressings are all going, the only thing in the room that is staying is the table and chairs as we just bought that....the windows are being replaced with golden oak frames, blinds are going, pelmet, etc. We need to choose colour for the walls, what window dressings we want and how dark to go with the parquet....i love the look of yours in the pic above.
My idea was to go off white on the walls, white skirts and match the roman blinds on the windows and the curtains framing the bay to the chair colour. Obviously just a pole rather than a pelmet as well.

8 years agoHaving had a think about this over night, i think i'd have to veto the white paintwork. I think to tie in the table with the floors, we need to go with the ' is it grey, is it taupe' theme. Tying in greys with browns ( wood ) is especially tricky as grey is cool and brown is warm, so you need to get a midddle of the road colour.
It is very on trend at present to paint both the woodwork and the walls the same colour ( in the correct paints obviously ), This leads to a lovely peaceful, harmonious look and will hopefully bring the colour of the windows and the flooring together with the walls. You just need to get the shade right ! Try not to go with the cool greys, go for the warm ones. Once everything is neutral you can add your accents with the curtains, which should contain the same base colour but possiby with another colour to contrast, such as Teal, Raspeberry etc. As the table is has a lovely modern touch to it, why not got for blinds instead, much more chic!
As you aren't using the Bay as such, why not build in a window seat? Chuck some beautiful chunky cushions on it, fabulous colours to brighten up the neutral look?
