Original Stained Glass

Hi there!

I have some beautiful original Art Deco stained glass windows in the bay window in my lounge, which I love, but they are freezing! I'd like to get them double glazed/insulated and was wondering what method is most effective for keeping the heat in? We're in South West London, could anyone recommend a company that does this type of thing? Oh, and I don't want to replace them with replica, want the existing windows made warm! Thanks in advance!

Hi, we had our 1930's original living windows encapsulated (sandwiched) and double glazed both sides. Look great. Going to get the front door panes done but only glazed on the front of the stained glass. Definitely worth doing. Worth shopping around and getting prices as some companies can rip you off. Regarding your location, I'm afraid I can't help you, Im in Stockport. I'm sure there is a huge selection to choose from.

We have used a company in Bolton (The Stained Glass Company Ltd) and they have done a great job for us... they also repair and clean up prior to encapsulating them. we are going to get our 3 panes for the front door done shortly before winter.... they are reasonable and were straight out to us, great customer service, when my 12 year old put his hand through our front door recently...!

Extremely plain sheer curtains so the colours could be seen during the day whilst allowing privacy. Plus a second set of curtains for keeping the heat in.

What colours did you decide on for the walls in the end? I am in the same predicament between polished pebble and pebble shore, but your new walls look more beige than grey, so I'm hoping you didn't use either of these colours or my plans will need changing (I need a grey!) lol x

Hi Jo. It looks a lovely hall. I would go for a warm white, to lighten the hall. Have a look at the various options from little Greene or farrow and ball. Perhaps consider a taupe'ish shade for the shirting boards and architraves to tie in with the paper? I assume you're leaving the stairs and door as wood? Perhaps go for for a console table over the radiator or a nice thick Wooden shelf with mirror and where you have a mirror currently add a little chair? Maybe one of the short velvet buttoned ones as there looks to be room? What are you doing with the floor?

We would always recommend replacing original doors with timber. It would be a shame to lose the authentic look and although UPVC composite doors are much better than they used to be they still don't look like real wood. Our wood doors have the same multi point locking system as a UPVC door for high security and the U-Value (insulation) is the same. No cold drafts with our doors. Also with our Teknos paint finish you can match it to any colour you want. Farrow & Ball french grey is very popular at the moment. We recently did this custom door with bespoke stained glass. The client wanted the glass to replicate the original stained glass but wanted new seals etc so we re-designed the glazing for them and they matched the sage green paint that they had used around their home. I hope you manage to persuade your partner to either keep the original door or replace it with wood. Good Luck!
