Extremely plain sheer curtains so the colours could be seen during the day whilst allowing privacy. Plus a second set of curtains for keeping the heat in.

How lovely. What about pleated or Roman blinds from the lower panel so that you never hide the stained glass?

Thanks for all your helpful comments. I have been thinking a lot about how we use the space and been less concerned with keeping rooms just for the girls. I was concerned that it currently looks like a 3 bedroom house with a study but we have no plans to move in the foreseeable future so I think I can put that aside as well. Looking at the plans drawn up by the previous owners is confusing me too much. Our needs are different so I have gone back to the basic floor plan of what we have at the moment. We want to remove the conservatories and utility room and replace these with a large open plan area which will include the existing living room and kitchen. There will be a column (maybe attached to island ) somewhere and velux windows in the roof. I want to keep the kitchen on the right and move the utility into the rear of the garage and install a shower room next to it. I think I would like the living area to be at the back and take advantage of the views. This means the dining area will be on the left of the kitchen . We will have 2 sets of bifold or sliding doors ( apparently it would be very costly to have one large set as we would need to hire a very large crane to put in the steel). I also want a wood burning stove. I still like the idea of a study or even a boot room with external door on the side but appreciate One Plans comments about the space not being big enough. Following because we'd like to replace the porch on our 1930s semi. It's difficult because ours originally had a storm porch with the front door recessed inside, but it has been moved to be flush with the front wall and a cheap porch stuck on front. We'd like to retain a closed in external porch for practical reasons, but it's difficult to make one look good when it wasn't part of the original design. I've looked around at other houses and I think the best looking porches stick with one third / two thirds proportions rather than having the line across the middle of the door. for example a brick wall for a third of the height and glass on top for two thirds. I would go for American oak boards - an amazing bargain and the long wide boards look great. We re-floored a three-story house in 2002. The house has been tenanted ever since, so the floors haven't exactly had much in the way of TLC, but they still look great. And of course, because it is solid wood, we can always just sand and re-oil if needed (though we haven't needed to yet). At the time, it cost less than £2000 for the timber for the whole house - a decent laminate would have cost twice that, even then. We bought a 1930s apartment overlooking Hyde Park in 2006. It wasn't in great condition but, under the grotty carpet, the original parquet was still there, and all the original panelled doors. We fixed it up respectfully and it was a great, and very comfortable, place to live. It broke our heart when we sold and the new owners gutted the place and threw everything in a skip.

Not sure how it works in the UK but in France if you are changing the appearance of your house that is visible from the road, you need prior permission. This is to avoid people doing things that are completely out of keeping with the neighbourhood, whether rendering, paintwork, or windows. Here you would probably have to go with cream rendering and retain the tiling, in which case choose a colour for the front door that picks up or contrasts with the brick/rust colour. My own first priority for the outside would be to deal with the garden, which you are very lucky to have, to get things in before the winter. One idea would be to get rid of the tiny patch of grass and lay thick gravel (not attractive to cats) plus a retaining path, create a simple structure to hide your dustbins (and bikes?), and invest in a couple of huge pots with some permanent planting and spring bulbs.

Thank you both. The windows are old and let in drafts so we need heavy curtains to draw at night. What colour? with a pattern or plain?

If it Has to be curtains, go for plain so as not to compete with the glass.

Before giving advice on colour it would be important to see the room in which the curtains hang.
