Help with a lounge

I am moving from a Victorian house to a new build. I will be taking my beloved, mellow yellow gold damask sofas and they will be placed in a contemporary room with bifold doors. I would like to dress the window in some way to match my sofas without detracting from the contemporary feel. Any ideas would be very welcome. Lynette

Hi there Lynette.
Have you got a picture of the sofa at all? On first thought, wed choose a plain grey fabric, but it really depends on the rest of the room. Could you share a moodboard of what the new room will look like?
This is a moodboard a recent customer tweeted us as they needed help, with a yellow sofa, and the samples they had chosen... (along with tartan carpet and grey Farrow & Ball paint)

And this is the final room...

If your sofa is already patterned, a plain texture might be more ideal, but do please share more details and we'd love to help.

Hi I think Dulux Muddy Puddle would work well, I also like teal with red, so I would add in some teal elements for a bit of contrast to all the warm colours.

Hi Clare, Firstly what a stunning space! Your finishes all match beautifully. One thing I'd suggest is to have Roman blinds rather than the floor length curtains? If you still really like the curtain pattern you could always have them made into Roman blinds. with your bay window I'd suggest turning it into a snug area? you could bring in one or two high back accent chairs with floor lamp and a little side table. You could keep the curtains here or go for some shutters? I'd put a sofa Infront of the window that is straight ahead of the door so that you aren't walking into one like you are doing at the moment. hope that helps? Poppy

Please help with awkward lounge layout

I haven't had long to look at it, but that is a tricky lounge. A decent size but an awkward shape. What would really help is knowing the measurements of each and every wall in that lounge. Moving walls and doors can be expensive and you should always consult a structural engineer. By moving the doors and walls, even though it makes the room technically smaller, it'll feel more useable. I moved the kitchen door to the corner, which frees up a bit of wall space to hang the TV. You would need to move some kitchen units, so I've put them against the stairs. You could fit more here anyway. I've moved the hallway door in a bit to square the room. I don't suppose you really NEED to do this, but it will make the room a more standard shape and make better use of the hall storage. Either of the layouts I can think of would equally work with the door where it is though. Sorry I haven't got the software or the time to draw the layouts but hopefully you can get the idea. The two layouts that spring to mind are 1) an L-shaped sofa in the window corner, with a single elsewhere (where the measurements were maybe?) You might fit a small desk by the double doors. OR 2) an L-shaped sofa partly under the stairs overhang, with the TV on the long wall opposite where it is in the photos. You could maybe put a single seat beside the double doors, and a desk in the corner near the window. Without moving walls, I'd maybe put an L sofa in the window corner and a single in the corner by the double doors. You might fit a small desk (110mm?) under the stairs. As I said though, if you could measure every wall, that would help get a better understanding of what could go where.

This is my current setting, I have a blank canvas with the new house, which is not yet built. It will be a 22ft X 16ft room with the only fixtures being a set of bi-fold doors.

What a lovely sofa Lynette! We'd be tempted to opt for the muted blue colour palette in your new home, with cream and naturals to match. In terms of window dressing, you have a couple of options for those large doors. Firstly, there's Easifit blinds that fit into the frames of the windows (provided it's uPVC), and operating on a free floating basis. The DuoLight Crush Ivory White is a splendid choice.
Alternatively, provided the doors aren't any bigger than 5m across, curtains are a lovely option. During the day they can frame your view, but at night they make a lovely snug environment. We'd go for a plain textured fabric for these, or one of our Borders for a little more interest.

In my opinion some of the fancier and heavier curtains that look great in a Victorian house look too fussy in a room with modern proportions.
Since you treasure these sofas it suggests you like a richer look so the key is achieving this in a modern way.
Personally I would have a plain, pale curtain and paint the walls a sumptuous colour.
A former house had Dulux DH Slate on the walls- in honesty it is quite scary when you first paint but when you layer in soft furnishings, put pictures on the walls it's dark colour frames your possessions. Personal I think these earthy green look great with wood and gilt.
