Hallway flooring

I have carpet in my small hallway ( only 4 metres square) and would like to replace it with a harder wearing finish. I have tried Amtico/Karndene samples but it looks quite unnatural as it is a cottage almost 200 years old and tiling/stone would be too cold. Wood or laminate might lift as the front door leads straight to the street outside and is not double glazed and gets damp as wet feet come in and out.
