Need help with furnishing a weirdly shaped living room! (in Zurich)

Dear all,

Me and my partner will be moving in our new flat in a week. We have the furniture for most rooms sorted out, but we can't seem to be able to get ideas on how to place the furniture in the living room / dining room, which is oddly shaped!

What is mandatory for us to have in this room is table with chairs, 2 seating sofa (2m long), armchair (or two), tv table with Tv and an area with some bookshelves. The area designated for the dining room is probably not really moveable, since the ceiling is kinda steep in that corner, and putting a sofa or tv there would make the space look pretty small and packed.

I attach a plan with the measures (sorry, homemade!) and a couple of pictures of the area.Thanks for any advice you might give us!!

Have you ever considered a real interesting eye catching piece of art work to really brighten up an area, I think a select piece of art would really make the space stand out, add interest, colour, texture and add a great talking point to the room....

Congratulations on the new house, looks stunning and full of charm! I'm guessing you want to keep the current furniture? If you do then there's still lots you can do while staying sympathetic to the character of the house. You said want to add your stamp to it. Why not have a bit of fun and run through some ideas about what you like, maybe inspired by an era, or style? Mid century, nautical, or even countries you have visited? Think about what time you'll be using the room, etc. Inject some quirkiness, through interesting patterns on your soft furnishings, rugs, and even the curtains. You could even think about re-arranging the furniture to suit you. Add some colourful pieces in the scarce rooms with a stylish ottoman or side tables on either side of the sofa with interesting and oversized lamps to add some symmetry, adding different layers of lighting will make the room elegant and stylish. Hi. You don't have any ideabooks set up so not sure what styles and colours you like etc. I agree with carolina's suggestions. Based on your lights (assuming you installed them!) I'd go for something like this. If you have the budget I'd cover the chimney breast in split face tiles (not too dark) and have a floating wooden unit beneath to add warmth. I love this sofa and footstool from made in the petrol blue (not sure of dimensions as website keeps crashing on me). I'd add a tallish but slim cabinet under the stairs with a sheepskin pouffe to the left of it. Floor lamp next to the sofa, art over it, and if you have the room a small round side table next to the chair.

My flat re-furb has progressed much since my last post - thank you all input. I have another dilemma which is to do with wall dressing for my hallway. At quick glance, I would put the table near between the window and the "breakfast wall". The L shaped couch would be facing the long wall. To create some separation from the kitchen. TV set along the wall opposite to the kitchen. I hope it is of help

...and I thought my living room was difficult!

Is there any chance you can swivel the fire to face away from the door opposite and into one of the square parts to make it more cosy?

Where the fixed seating is I would put my dining table. Then the other side of the table I would put some chairs and maybe at the ends of the table as well. It’s a bit hard to see from the floor plan I think some more photos would be useful but I would probably out the sofa at the bottom of the room because I love how open the room is. If you had an L shaped sofa it might fit really nicely there. Hope this gives you some ideas and good luck with your move!!
