Great sliding door - could this be a bath/bed doorway option?

I have a doorway opening from a front facing bedroom onto a bathroom en-suite without a door currently. The neighbours can see straight over as the windows are only cafe height shutters. Privacy is needed but without a bulky door. I really like this sliding door, perhaps with frozen/non see through glass. Do you know of any tips to put me off using this for a bathroom? Would you agree? Where did you get it?

Yes, we have used this type of door several times to separate privacy areas. Just make sure you have enough clearance for the door to slide onto a flat wall.

Many thanks for your feedback. I would like to explore this further. Please can you let me know the company's name (sliding door maker) so I can look at their website? Also, I have a carpeted floor rather than your smooth wooden floor. Will this be problematic?

I agree with Jonathan, you probably aren't going to get everything you want. My plan leaving the shower room and swapping the kitchen and bathroom is good. It leaves you a good sized bathroom for three beds, and a separate shower room. We all prefer our own plans and I like mine because i've used every inch possible. Plus, I only knocked down one small wall down between kitchen and living and put one wall up to make two bedrooms at the front. The master gets a nice big window with a private patio....nice feature. It also utilises the side entrance as a pantry gaining space in the kitchen. However, as Jonathan says either of the plans with no extension will leave an undersized living / kitchen / dining area. Thus an extension is necessary, but even that's pushing it. The budget just isn't going to stretch to all of the work in one go. I'm guessing you can just about do all the internals, which requires a new kitchen and bathroom, neither of which you could go mad on. Some of the rooms need better windows as you pointed out. It would still leave the undersized space at the rear, which would require an extension at some point, but the bulk of the work would be done. Either way, it's a very tight budget, it's an old house, and stuff crops up in those all the time that you don't expect. A healthy budget to achieve all, including the extension............with a contingency included for small disasters should be £60-80K

I love the 'where do you keep your elbows' conundrum. ^^ It was great to see your layout because it was what I was thinking to try and reclaim some of the hall space. Danielle also captured the idea of switching the bathroom and the kitchen extremely well - and I really think this works too. I realise though that moving the door to the garden will involve a new set of stairs down to the garden - a big change, but perhaps minimises the changes to the internal walls as a balance. Jonathan's idea is also very creative - I had never even thought of this possible configuration. I realise as I am seeing these ideas that I'm more willing to give up some of the larger bedroom space as well, even if it off-sets the fireplace, to keep the idea of the wood burning stove as the heart of the flat. It may be that we are a small family of 3 and I'm thinking of this apartment as a family space, rather than for sharers. For sharers, maximum bedroom space is probably ideal... but for a family, at least in our case, we don't need much bedroom space. Also wondering about making the large bedroom smaller - to the edge of the fireplace to increase the bathroom. And moving the kitchen to the main living space... but not sure if this is overthinking things. And maybe Danielle above is the simplest option, even with replacing the stairs....

I got prices from a local supplier based on carpet/vinyl/laminate being around the £10-12 psqm price and they were all similar prices ie £280-300 inc fitting. However if I get laminate then of course my OH will expect me to fit it to save money, lol. I’m not sure I can face the extra job and vinyl is a no no now due to the floor not being quite level without boarding over it again (more cost) So if I do go for a carpet - being a downstairs room and probably having sports equipment in it as well (so likely to get walked on with shoes etc) .. should I go for the cheaper textured style they put in rentals?? I like the idea of texture and slight pattern and not fluffy carpet due to me having bad dust allergies... Any recommendations on what looks good and isn’t too pricey? Would have loved herringbone pattern but all so expensive

Hi Abbie, I came across this discussion in the forum and it looked like a house with lots of potential and I couldn't resist sketching out an idea. Did the purchase go through? I thought that a side and rear extension wouldn’t add much space whilst also costing significantly more. But a rear extension which is slightly wider than the original house would be very beneficial. Downstairs the old kitchen becomes a utility and W/C. The hallway opens onto an L shape kitchen/dining/living room, which is also attached to the front lounge with double sliding doors. Upstairs the existing bathroom becomes an ensuite for a new master bedroom with a dressing area. A new bathroom is added in part of bedroom 2 which is enlarged into the extension. Bedrooms 3 and 4 also slightly increase in size. Please let me know what you think? I have a few more alternative ideas as well. And I wish you all the best with your project!! Phill

Not at all. The tech will install the proper track for carpeting. I have always used NY Sliding Door Company on 5th Avenue. I'm unsure of all of their locations but I'm sure the website will be more informative. Good luck!
